My story

Me? Cooking and selling my food to others? Never in my life! I stepped back so often when family and friends suggested I think about cooking as a form of income. I always replied there is a difference between cooking for family and friends as you listen to Nina Simone and enjoy a glass of your favourite wine, and cooking on a bigger scale. I thought that I was born to explore and teach history and work with children and teenagers, but not to cook!

My thinking about cooking changed slightly when I met some wildly interesting people on their own food adventure. We collaborated, exchanging products and conversing about our common values. For a few months, I had the pleasure of being part of a team that was creating a small food revolution in the coastal town of Tramore.

One day, just before the lockdown, I decided to leave that kitchen to devote more of my time to teaching educational programs. I felt ready. I was already teaching in one of the Polish schools at the Polish Embassy. Unfortunately, lockdown thwarted these plans completely. We all stayed home. The world slowed down. Everyone was talking about the pandemic.

As a historian, I knew lockdown could go on for longer than expected. On that note, my last job in archaeology was an excavation of a mass grave of cholera victims in Kilkenny. My imagination seeded some strange scenarios around the current pandemic. I knew that I had to forget about educational programs for a while and that I had to find a new job that would also allow me to be at home with my son. I was teaching online on Saturdays but there were a few days left to fill in.
