An Tairseach Organic Farm & Ecology Centre

An Tairseach Organic Farm & Ecology Centre Organic farming and ecological exploration on the beautiful grounds of the Dominican Convent in Wickl RCN: 20050191

An Tairseach Organic Farm and Ecology Centre in Wicklow Town has been at the forefront of the organic food movement acquiring organic status back in 2006. This was the culmination of several years of intensive work, clearing the soil of chemicals, restoring its fertility, improving hedgerows, laying out pathways and planting thousands of trees. The farm now produces an abundance of organic vegetab

les as well as organic beef and pork. There is a large garden with polytunnels at the back of the Ecology Centre building and a 70-acre site up on the hill. As well as the vegetables and animal grazing areas there is also a wildlife conservation area and a thriving woodland. The organic farm shop at An Tairseach sells an array of produce including home grown vegetables, fruit and meat, other organic produce by local suppliers as well as whole foods, store cupboard ingredients and ecological toiletries and household cleaning supplies. The Ecology Centre provides accommodation, venues and services, offering a number of rooms which can be rented by community groups and businesses. The conference room has full, top of the range, audio-visual facilities and a stage and podium for speakers. Throughout the year a number of courses and retreats are offered along with two 10-week sabbaticals in the spring and autumn. These events focus on promoting ecological education, personal well-being and positive physical and mental health and healing. There are 15 ensuite bedrooms available for rent by individuals or groups for a quiet retreat or reflection time. We also have a cottage in the grounds which is available for short term stays.

Join us for dinner created with the freshest ingredients from An Tairseach Organic Farm followed by a screening of IMMRÁM and a Q&A Session with Siobhán and Diarmuid.

For a full year between the Celtic new year of Samhain, Immrám, an experimental nonfiction film, follows the life of Wild Irish creators Siobhán de Paor, Diarmuid Lyng and their three children.

The former Wexford hurling captain and his partner are at the centre of a growing movement aiming to revive Irish language and culture, inspired by teachings of the late philosopher and mystic John Moriarty.

Travel with them along St. Declan’s pilgrim route, listen and learn from the wisdom of John Moriarty and explore the grassroot revival of the Irish culture that is happening across the country.

Ireland is often seen as an outpost of a resurgent indigenous European culture. Watching IMMRÁM you will visually navigate the complex connections between place, language, environment, and contemporary lived life in Ireland.

This film was directed by Michael Holly and Mieke Vanmechelen.

WHEN: Friday 17. July

PRICE: €45

Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Kevin of Glendalough. St. Kevin like many other Irish saints, was well known for living in harmony with nature.

He moved into a cave in Glendalough following his ordination as a priest after being led to it by an angel. The cave in which he lived as a hermit has become known at St. Kevin’s Bed.

For seven years he would live a solitary life going barefoot, eating sparingly, wearing clothes of animal skin, and praying all day.

Disciples were soon attracted to Kevin. By 540 Kevin’s fame as a teacher and holy man had spread far and wide. Over time, Glendalough Monastery grew to one of the largest and influential of monastic places of study in Ireland.

One of the most widely known poems of the Nobel prize winner Seamus Heaney, ‘St Kevin and the Blackbird’, relates the story of Kevin holding out his hand with trance-like stillness while a blackbird builds a nest in it, lays eggs, the eggs hatch and the chicks fledge.

You can now donate online to support the Conservation Area and woodlands at An Tairseach!

We have been planting Millennium Wood and Dunbur Wood for over twenty years. We have native hedgerows and a thriving pond in our Conservation Area — all of it sustained by our Tree Sponsorship Scheme and the donations of those who care for this green belt in Wicklow. Every contribution goes directly to keeping it growing.

World Bee Day

In Europe bees pollinate over 80% of crops and wild flowers but they are in serious decline due to pollution and climate change. These fantastic fuzzy creatures help keep our plants and planet alive, keeping ecosystems healthy and maintaining biodiversity.

Our Farm Shop at An Tairseach stocks some of the best local Wicklow honey available. We are proud to sell our own organic honey, grown in our eight hives on An Tairseach’s organic farm and we also stock East Wicklow Honey from the great Wicklow beekeepers Joe Good & Tony Lyons.
