In trying to pretend we have control over anything during war, I’ve decided that a basement Pesach mini-kitchen seems like a great idea. Staying with sorbet (I mean, I know it freezes well😂).

What are you doing to pretend maintain control?

Before the Meshek, before Pat BaMelach, there was matza. It has been our anchor for close to 20 years, first in our backyard, then in schools and shuls in New York, New Jersey, Michigan and Ohio... until it eventually found its home on Rosh Tzurim.

There is something about the flour on the table, the 18 minute playlist and the matza in the oven that always brings people back.

These are uncertain times. But I love this anchor so so much. So in the weeks leading up to Pesach, we’ll run a few workshops, with people who have been coming for years because it may just be our true north.

War days can seem endless. But I’m a camp girl at heart so my latest plan is to approach each day like it’s camp: there’s nikayon (toss a load of laundry in) and shiur (chevruta with my sister) followed by Aruchat Eser (today that was coffee with a friend). Then we head into malechet yad (see the picture for today’s project 😂), followed by sha’at menucha. Continued with sport (walking the dog… admittedly a bit of a stretch) and then toranut (make dinner). We’ve started our night tochnit (we’re making our way through all Spider-Man movies). Toss in some work and some sirens and you’ve got the picture. I think it may be a genius reframe 😊. Can you turn your day into camp? I’m looking at you.

A month before October 7th, Yael and I found ourselves at Clyde’s Apple Cider Mill in Mystic, Connecticut.

It was perfect.
Crisp air.
Apple slushees.
Fall in New England.

So for Purim I tried to recreate just a taste of that moment — a little apple cider stand on our kitchen island.

Apple slushees.
Frosé.
Apple cider donuts.
Chocolate-drizzled popcorn.
Cinnamon in the air.

If Purim wasn’t going to look the way it normally does, I figured we could lean into a memory of a time when things were calm and everything tasted like apples and fall.

It’s always going to be about the people around the table.

Workshops.
Private events.
Family smachot.

The activity changes.
The table stays.

And it’s almost always about the people you’re sitting with.

A winter night at the Meshek looks like this:
people piling in with their own mahjong tiles and mats, soup simmering, wine poured, quiet music in the background. Laughter between turns. No rush, no agenda—just time together.
In the middle of it all, my son came home from the army to surprise me. He played a few hours of mahj, sat with us, and then headed back to base. Yael and Dov were here too—my bookend kids—and suddenly the room felt exactly as full as it was meant to be.
This is what the Meshek was made for.
People who love each other. People who don’t know each other yet. Being together for a while.
I wrote more about the night here → https://meshek48.com/mahjong-the-meshek/

Mahjong at the Meshek is in one week! Last year it was super fun and this year we’re adding wine (what could be bad?!?). Reserve your space, bring your friends, bring your set. It’s accidentally trendy. 😂

Tu B’Shvat shout-out to the unsung hero: barley 🌾

Trees get all the attention,
but beer doesn’t make itself.

Here’s to things that grow slowly,
need patience,
and taste even better when shared.

Reposting a reel I love —
made by people I love .
Good beer, good place, good Tu B’Shvat 🍺

Our annual Mahjong at the Meshek is on its way. February 10th at 7:30 pm. Think soup, wine, mahj. What isn’t perfect about that? Beginners are welcome. Experts are welcome. Entire yishuvim are welcome. Abi will be there offering tutorials throughout. Shoutout to my mahj ladies: Abi, Cippi, Michele and Jessica. It’s cheaper than therapy and a whole lot more fun.

All of our kids have worked for us at some point or another. I’ve always loved that part of starting a family business. Tomorrow we level up with Eitan and his friends taking over our space and making a pizza and beer pop up. I’m actually fairly certain we aren’t invited. We definitely aren’t the demographic (also we’re definitely not cool enough 😂). I’ve had a front row seat to the planning and from time to time will toss out a word or two (do you have enough cups? Has someone made pizza before? Yes to both 😂). I’m just so proud of them all. They’re all in the army and I assume opening will depend on who is home for the weekend. But they’ll be open tomorrow and if I’m lucky maybe I can sneak in. ♥️
