The Pistachio Shortage is a Wake-Up Call for the Food Industry

The recent surge in demand for pistachios, driven by the viral popularity of “Dubai chocolate,” has left many in the food industry scrambling. What seemed like a fleeting social media trend quickly turned into a global supply crisis. Shelves emptied, prices soared, and even major retailers found themselves rationing pistachio products.

This isn’t just about one nut or one chocolate bar. It’s a reminder of just how fragile our food supply chains really are. A single viral video can now send shockwaves through global markets, exposing vulnerabilities that have been quietly building for years.

The pistachio shortage is a symptom of a much larger issue. If a single trend can disrupt global supply chains, it’s clear we need to rethink how we work together.
Only by working together-across borders, sectors, and disciplines-can we create a food industry that is robust, responsive, and ready for the next viral trend.

New Blog Post: Primary Field Data Unlocks Carbon Sequestration Potential

As the food and beverage sector prepares for the GHG Protocol’s Land Sector and Removals Guidance (LSRG), the importance of primary field data is coming into sharper focus. Our latest blog explores how robust, on-the-ground data collection is becoming essential for credible carbon sequestration reporting and compliance.

Primary field data not only strengthens carbon accounting, but also opens the door to more dynamic and adaptive supply chain management. By collecting site-specific information, companies can better understand the variability in carbon sequestration across different landscapes and production systems. This insight enables more targeted interventions, such as adjusting crop rotations, cover cropping, or agroforestry practices, to maximize both climate benefits and productivity.

Moreover, as regulatory and market expectations evolve, companies equipped with high-quality field data will be better positioned to respond to new sustainability requirements and to demonstrate leadership in transparent climate action.

Discover how food and beverage companies can leverage primary field data to meet Scope 3 GHG emission goals, comply with the upcoming LSRG standards, and transform supply chains into carbon sinks.

The European Commission Simplifies Deforestation Regulation

The European Commission has announced targeted simplifications to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), directly addressing industry feedback to make compliance more manageable, especially for food and beverage companies trading in commodities like coffee, cocoa, soy, palm oil, and cattle products.

What’s Changed?
- Annual Due Diligence Statements: Companies can now submit due diligence statements (DDS) once a year, instead of for every shipment or batch. This reduces the frequency and administrative effort required for compliance.
- Reuse for Reimports: Large companies can reuse existing DDSs for goods reimported that were already placed on the EU market, streamlining documentation for recurring imports.
- Group Submissions: Authorized representatives can now submit DDSs on behalf of all companies within a group, making it easier for corporate groups to manage their compliance centrally.
- Simplified Downstream Obligations: Large downstream companies (e.g., processors, distributors) now only need to collect and reference their suppliers’ DDS numbers when submitting their own, instead of duplicating full due diligence checks.
- 30% Reduction in Administrative Burden: The Commission estimates these measures will cut administrative costs by nearly a third, directly responding to industry demands for simpler, more cost-effective compliance.

These changes are designed to help businesses maintain access to the EU market while supporting global efforts to halt deforestation. Efficient compliance is now more achievable, make sure your teams are ready.

Today, the Commission is providing further simplifications and reducing the administrative burden to facilitate the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). In this context, it has pu

Are you wondering if sustainability investments in the food and agriculture sector actually pay off?

A new report by Deloitte and NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business reveals that they do! Nearly all surveyed executives reported realizing financial value from their sustainability initiatives.
The financial benefits are significantly influenced by where a company sits in the value chain. For example, processors often see higher revenue growth from sustainable commodities, while retailers can leverage direct consumer access to optimize offerings and drive both revenue and cost savings.

A key insight from the report is the role of data-driven methodologies like ROSI (Return on Sustainability Investment) in unlocking financial value. By quantifying the economic benefits of sustainability programs, such as operational efficiencies, waste reduction, and improved innovation, businesses can make smarter decisions and build more resilient supply chains. This approach empowers organizations to connect their sustainability strategies directly to financial performance, ensuring both environmental and economic success.

The report highlights how businesses can leverage these insights to create sustainable value while meeting rising consumer expectations. It’s time to embrace data-driven strategies to transform food systems for the future.

When sustainability means drowning in forms and questions

Farmers today spend countless hours completing repetitive sustainability questionnaires instead of tending to their crops. Third-party certifications, brand-specific frameworks, and regulatory requirements all demand similar information through different formats and systems.

Technology can transform this fragmented approach through intelligent data management. By mapping questions across frameworks, information entered once automatically populates multiple questionnaires. Static data like farm location and plot sizes remains stored for future use, while only time-sensitive information requires updating.
This streamlined approach cuts administrative work, improves data accuracy, and creates a single source of truth for sustainability metrics. Most importantly, it shifts farmers' time from paperwork back to implementing sustainable practices where it matters most – in the fields.
