The word "tapelu" meaning a large vessel quite literally derives its name from the huge quantities that it is cooked in.
This is a popular dish among the Gujarati khatri's of Surat and is widely served on most festivals and occasion. Best relished with pooris, this preparation is famous for the sweetness of the onions that have been slow cooked and caramalized, the warmth and heat of all the spices from the garam masala and the juicy chunks of lamb.
