One evening, I got a message from saying a group of college students from were visiting my uncleβs farm for farm tourism. My uncle is a pro at this as he has been doing it for years. Peter wanted us to help translate everything into English for the students. I was a little hesitant at first because I am still learning farming terms. But then I thought, we come from a family that has been farming for generations. If not us, then who will show what we do and how we live. So, we decided to go.
We reached the farm and without wasting time, we started the walk from one corner of the farm. The kids were curious, sharp, and full of questions. They asked everything from how we grow crops to how we sell our produce in the local market. Some questions we could answer, some we could not, and that was okay.
A few minutes later, my uncle and the students moved ahead, leaving us behind. They were completely in their own world, sharing stories, knowledge, and laughter. At that moment, it felt like language did not matter at all. The students found him really sweet, clicked pictures with him, and I am sure it truly made his day.
We then took them to our coffee roastery and showed them the process. How coffee beans are winnowed to remove the husk, how they are roasted, and how they are powdered. Binu demonstrated everything while the students journaled and sketched right there. Watching them draw with such speed was truly impressive.
We made them black coffee too. Some of them had never tasted coffee before, and seeing their surprise and joy was priceless. Later, we went to the Siruvani river. By then, it was getting dark. A few of them stepped into the river, and one student quietly took some mud from the riverbank and turned it into a piece of art. That moment said everything about how they saw the world.
They later showcased this entire experience as part of an exhibition at their college.
We also learnt that when hands work with soil, plants, and care, language needs no words. That evening reminded us that farming, like art, is not always explained. It is felt. Student , Go fly and explore. The future is safe in your hands
