Every monsoon the river brings for us a lot of wood. After it swells, then sinks, we're always looking out for what we can use, some to burn, some to build.
Last December, we found half burried next to the river, a log that would make the perfect counter top, to build around the oven.
A plan was made. When Govind and Monu came for a couple of days in January, thomas, minami, robin, richelyn, Neha and harsh*t all went back to where the log was, dug it out and rolled it into the river. Almost 6 feet long and a feet in diameter, it weighed many stones!
We floated the log downstream and rolled it out into the river bank just outside our land. They it dried for a couple of months until Govind visited again in May, with Sanju, Ganesh, Harsh*t and Neha lent a hand, using a nicely knotted up hammock as a rope and the six of us carried it up to where it now waits to be transformed, into a counter next to the oven.

It's time for a reintroduction 🍃
mahua found this spot by the River Dev in Nandora in 2020.

Since then he has opened up the space and hosted people from near and far, a few have settled down here along with him. 👫👬👭

all this while everyone has been busy learning by doing - experimenting with different methods of growing things, building with mud, wood, and bamboo, cooking, fermentation and pickling - learning and sharing laughter.

Our Story

Adi is derived from the word ‘adivasi’ while Johar is used to greet, meaning ‘hello’, which is commonly used both culturally and lately even politically, by the adivasis of central India. Adi-Johar aims to be a meeting ground of adivasi and mainstream knowledge. The primary intention of this initiative is to introduce adivasi knowledge and experience to non-adivaisis and people from the mainstream. We envision this to be a space, both physical in the form of farmland in Nandora village, Balaghat District, Madhya Pradesh, and virtual, in the form of this page.

This has evolved as an organic subsequent stage in our journey which started from ‘Humans of Gondwana’ - https://www.facebook.com/humansgondwana/. We met many people, formed meaningful relationships, and learnt a great deal. We felt that this needed further direction and reshaping, and thus this initiative.

On our land, we plan to preserve and promote adivasi ways of living and worldview. This will include preserving both tangible and intangible aspects such as indigenous seeds, farming and food practices as well as values and beliefs of how to live in sync with nature. The page will act as a medium to communicate stories from the land, to connect with people from varying backgrounds and also act as a forum to document and share our learning are experiences.
