STP Is Not Plumbing: The Hidden COD Problem in Hotel STP Design

A hotel STP cannot be designed using the same assumptions used for domestic sewage.

Hotel kitchens, restaurants, bars and banquet halls can introduce significantly higher organic loads into the wastewater stream. When COD is underestimated during design, the biological process may be pushed beyond the conditions it was designed to handle.

This can eventually contribute to:

• Increased oxygen demand
• Biological stress
• Reduced biomass stability
• Foam formation
• Floating sludge
• Clarifier solids problems
• Operational complaints

The key lesson for consultants and engineers is simple:

Reactor design must follow organic loading — not templates.

A banquet hotel cannot be designed using domestic COD assumptions.

STP-ல் நுரை வருதா? பயப்பட வேண்டாம்!

நீங்கள் ஒரு STP-ஐ operate பண்ணிக்கிட்டு இருக்கலாம், control பண்ணிக்கிட்டு இருக்கலாம் அல்லது புதுசாக STP install பண்ணியிருக்கலாம்.

அப்படிப்பட்ட நேரத்தில் பல பேருக்கு ஒரு சந்தேகம் வரும்:

“Aeration tank-ல இருந்து இந்த white foam ஏன் வருது? STP fail ஆகிடுச்சா?”

அவசியம் இல்லை!

Foam என்பது liquid-ன் மேல் உருவாகும் சிறிய சிறிய air bubbles-ன் ஒரு layer.

STP-ல் aeration கொடுக்கும்போது, wastewater-ல் இருக்கும் microorganisms அல்லது bacteria oxygen-ஐ பயன்படுத்தி pollutants-ஐ consume செய்கின்றன. இந்த bacteria வளர்ந்து biomass ஆகி, flocs உருவாகி, பின்னர் settle ஆகின்றன. இதன் மூலம் treated water கிடைக்கிறது.

STP ஆரம்பமாக operate ஆகும் முதல் நாட்களில் இந்த biological activity develop ஆக ஆரம்பிக்கும். Biomass அதிகரிக்கும்போது white foam உருவாகலாம்.

அப்படியானால் என்ன செய்யக்கூடாது?

❌ Foam வந்தவுடன் பயப்படக்கூடாது.
❌ STP fail ஆகிவிட்டது என்று நினைக்கக்கூடாது.
❌ Foam வந்ததற்காக aeration-ஐ stop பண்ணக்கூடாது.
❌ உடனே chemical defoamer-ஐ solution என்று நினைக்கக்கூடாது.

Aeration-ஐ stop பண்ணுவது situation-ஐ இன்னும் மோசமாக்கலாம். Defoamer பயன்படுத்தினால் கூட அது பல நேரங்களில் temporary solution மட்டுமே.

Biology develop ஆகி biomass increase ஆகும்போது, இந்த white foam பொதுவாக குறைய ஆரம்பிக்கும். Foam gradually brownish ஆகி, STP biological system stabilize ஆகும்போது மறைந்து போகலாம்.

ஆனால் foam நீண்ட நாட்களாக தொடர்ந்து இருந்தால், மிகவும் dark ஆக இருந்தால் அல்லது unusual smell இருந்தால், அதை கவனமாக investigate செய்ய வேண்டும்.

Initial days-ல் white foam வருதா? பயப்பட வேண்டாம். முதலில் அதற்குப் பின்னால் இருக்கும் biology-யை புரிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள்.
