More than 135 years ago, common man Mr. Ponnusamy Naicker of Sadarasspattinam probably vowed to slave the British with their own gastronomy! Hence was born, “Smith Field Bakery” in 1885 at the heart of old Madras. The bakery was named after British Officer E. Conran Smith largely to attract the sect of Anglo-Indians who were the then major consumers sparing the locals who fell ill! “Smith Field”, today is a household name in the northern Chennai and is synonymous to ‘bakery’. Numerous bread, bun and biscuits are baked to perfection every day as they were done 125 years ago, without preservatives. The bread and biscuits are delicacies themselves and the men behind these have vowed to carry on the legacy of Mr. Ponnusamy Naicker without tainting it with modern technique…

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mr. S. Shanker, beloved third-generation owner of Smith Field Bakery.

He dedicated his life to carrying forward his family’s legacy with passion, care, and an unwavering commitment to customers, helping shape our bakery into what it is today.

Mr. Shanker will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
