Long ago in the hills of Sikkim and Darjeeling, villagers struggled to find a chili that could survive the cold mountain weather and still give strong taste to their simple food.
One season, a wild plant began growing near forest edges. It had small round red fruits that looked like little berries. Curious farmers tasted itāand the heat was so strong that it brought tears instantly. But at the same time, it had a unique fruity aroma and rich flavor.
They started calling it āDalleā (round ball chili) and used it carefully in chutneys and pickles to preserve it for long winters. Over time, it became a must-have in every home kitchen.
As trade grew, travelers from Nepal and the hills carried it across regions. It became famous as Dalle Khursani / Akabare Khursani, known as the āfire of the Himalayas.ā
Today, it is not just a chiliāit is a symbol of Himalayan identity, used in pickles, momos, and gourmet foods, bringing the taste of the mountains to the world.
