Located midway between Darjeeling and Kalimpong towns, Kaleege House borders the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary (one of the oldest in the country) in the North while overlooking the tea estates of Rangli-Rangliot, Gielle and Teesta Valley. On a clear day, you can see the river Mahanadi snake its course through the plains of Siliguri. Whether mountain trails, birding (there are plenty to see), farming, or just enjoying a sundowner with a book, Kaleege House is an ideal getaway for those looking to just give in to the environs and unwind.
Overview If you have been planning an escape to the charms of the countryside without having to trade the escape for rudimentary living, your quest stops here. Kaleege House—named after the Himalayan pheasant that you see scurring around the grounds at dawn and dusk—is a residence open to guests who want quiet time off, or want to devote themselves to pursue reading, writing, birding, strumming and singing, or doing nothing. Kaleege House is situated in Takdah, a cantonment town set up by the British Raj. The British found the place ideal to help their soldiers recuperate from the ills brought on by the heat and dust of the plains. And it continues to be today. At an altitude of 5000 feet, the cold doesn’t bite nor is it oppressively hot. In the indigenous Lepcha language, Takdah literally translates to “Land of the Mist” and that interspersed with days and months of glorious sunshine and clear blue skies tells you what enticed the Brits to this location.
House & Bedroom Kaleege House is a modern take on a quintessential plantation residence. Tinned roof, red-oxide and wooden flooring combined with large, split-level open-plan living areas, and modern amenities. We, however, do encourage guests to leave behind the gadgetry and surrender themselves to the surroundings.
The cozy guest bedroom with its dormer window infuses the room with the morning light. On full moon nights, the room is bathed in the moon’s glow. For a quiet sit-down/ reading time, you can choose the comfortable sofa chairs in the room, or park yourself outside in the porch listening to bird calls. The bedroom enjoys complete privacy, even from the open-plan common area.
