Haven Farm

Haven Farm Haven Farm is located down from the Singalila National Park in Darjeeling District in NE India. Haven is a project that my husband Daniel and I are working on.

We are creating a resort/farm where people can stay and relax either after a trek on the Singalila National Forest trail or come instead of the trek. We are incorporating the principles of permaculture as much as we can throughout the building. We hope that it will truly be a Haven for travelers and tourists. Join us as we document our journey of creating a Haven.

There is a rhythm to weaving a Doko (डोको) that you can’t learn from a book. Today, our kids are stepping working to explain the intricate process as they watch a craftsman at work.

From splitting the bamboo into flexible strips to the final sturdy rim, they’re learning how this iconic Nepali basket is built to withstand the weight of the mountains. Whether it’s carrying manure to the fields, stones for a new wall, or the season’s harvest, the Doko is an integral tool of our farm

We aren't just making baskets; we’re making sure the stories and skills of our ancestors aren't lost to time. 🏔️✨

We had the pleasure of hosting Anudeep and Yawan at Haven Farm last October end. Anudeep is a doctoral researcher at the university of British Columbia. We have known Anudeep since 2023, when she and Yawan came to Sepi to conduct a workshop on memory mapping with community youth under Living with Forest . Her relationship with Sepi and its community members was strengthened when she came back a few times last April to document oral histories of Sepi upon Haven Farm’s invitation and coordination. In their trip to Sepi in October, Yawan and Anudeep digitized documents and photographs from families upon their consultation. The digitized materials will be archived and owned by, and housed in the community of Sepi.

We welcome artists and professionals of all kinds, who are looking for a quiet place to work, input, listen and/or learn from the land and people in our community.
