🚨 FISHMEAL MARKET ALERT | 14 OCTOBER 2026
🇵🇪 PERU’S FISHMEAL SUPPLY UNDER PRESSURE — CAN INDIA 🇮🇳 WIN BIG IN GLOBAL MARKETS?
🇨🇳 China’s Import Demand • 🌍 Tight Global Supply • 🇮🇳 India’s Export Opportunity
Market outlook: Global fishmeal supply could fall to its lowest level in a decade, creating a potential opportunity for Indian exporters—but not a guaranteed export boom.
According to the Marine Ingredients Organisation (IFFO), its October 2026 assessment projects global fishmeal supply at less than 4.6 million metric tonnes for 2026, potentially the lowest annual level since 2016. Peru’s prolonged fishing disruption remains a key factor behind the outlook.
For India’s fishmeal industry, this is a development worth watching closely.
🔴 MARKET DEVELOPMENTS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
🇵🇪 1. PERU — A KEY SUPPLY CONCERN
Peru typically accounts for around 20% of global fishmeal production. Its 2026 North-Central anchovy fishing season was suspended on 10 June after only about 25% of the initial quota had been caught, according to IFFO’s August assessment.
This disruption has contributed to pressure on global marine ingredient availability.
However, future supply will depend on fishing conditions, scientific assessments, regulatory decisions and production in other countries.
🇨🇳 2. CHINA — A MAJOR IMPORT MARKET
Trade figures reported for January–August 2026 indicate that China imported approximately 1.014 million tonnes of fishmeal. Reported supplier volumes included around 375,000 tonnes from Peru, 149,000 tonnes from Vietnam and 96,000 tonnes from India.
These figures highlight China's importance in the international fishmeal trade and show that India already participates in this market.
The opportunity is to strengthen that position—not to assume that Chinese buyers will automatically switch suppliers.
🇮🇳 3. INDIA — AN OPPORTUNITY, NOT A GUARANTEE
Indian exporters could attract additional enquiries if international buyers diversify their sourcing amid supply uncertainty.
But winning new business will depend on five factors:
- Quality: Consistent protein content and product specifications.
- Price: Competitive landed cost compared with other origins.
- Volume: Reliable supply and realistic shipment commitments.
- Compliance: Traceability, laboratory certificates and export documentation.
- Trust: Consistent delivery and long-term buyer relationships.
The real opportunity is to turn market uncertainty into repeat export orders.
🦐 4. WHAT COULD THIS MEAN FOR SHRIMP FEED?
Fishmeal is an important ingredient in many aquaculture feeds. Changes in availability and price may influence feed manufacturers' sourcing and formulation decisions.
If fishmeal costs remain elevated, manufacturers may evaluate alternative protein ingredients while maintaining nutritional quality and feed performance.
For shrimp farmers, the practical priorities remain feed quality, shrimp growth, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and overall production cost. Fishmeal market movements do not automatically translate into equivalent changes in shrimp feed prices.
📋 5. INDIAN EXPORTER ACTION CHECKLIST
Before pursuing new export orders, fishmeal suppliers should complete these six steps:
- [ ] Verify demand: Contact importers and confirm current requirements.
- [ ] Check prices: Compare competitor quotations and total landed costs.
- [ ] Test quality: Obtain recent laboratory reports against buyer specifications.
- [ ] Confirm supply: Calculate realistically available export volumes.
- [ ] Check compliance: Verify destination-country regulations, certifications and documentation.
- [ ] Secure the deal: Agree on specifications, shipment schedules, payment terms and quality acceptance before committing.
🔥 THE BIG QUESTION FOR INDIA
Will Indian fishmeal exporters use this period of global supply uncertainty to establish stronger, long-term positions in China and other international markets?
Or will price competition, inconsistent quality and supply limitations prevent India from capturing more business?
My view: A temporary supply shortage can generate enquiries, but dependable quality, competitive economics and reliable delivery are what build a lasting export market.
💬 What is the biggest barrier facing Indian fishmeal exporters?
A. Quality consistency
B. Competitive pricing
C. Reliable export volumes
D. International buyer confidence
E. Logistics and regulatory compliance

Market note — 14 October 2026: The global supply figure is an IFFO projection, not a final full-year result. Import figures refer to January–August 2026 and should be checked against official trade records before commercial decisions are made.
