Then and Now: Our Hyderabad Collective Lake

How are you preparing to slow down water this monsoon?

Share in the comments!

We are building check dams and nalabunds so that the rainwater doesn’t just run off quickly, but instead slows down and seeps into the land.

Our collectives begin with a systems truth: food, water, and shelter are not outputs we extract from land, but emergent properties of a healthy living system.

So we invest first in the long work of restoring soil, water, biodiversity, and building stewardship.

Only when the land has abundance do we permit ourselves to build within it.

Ever wondered why wells are usually built at the lowest point of a landscape?

Water obeys gravity.

When it rains, water naturally flows downhill and slowly seeps underground. Over time, groundwater collects more in low-lying areas, which means:
• the water table is closer to the surface
• wells don’t need to be dug as deep
• and water is easier to access when temperatures soar

Nature was doing water management long before we invented pipelines.

Biodiversity surveys matter because they turn care for ecosystems into measurable learning.

We want biodiversity to thrive, but good intentions alone do not tell us whether a landscape is actually becoming healthier. Surveys give us evidence.

By surveying the same places over time, we can see whether our interventions are working, stagnating, or failing. That feedback loop improves our design decisions: what works gets strengthened, and what doesn’t gets corrected.

Regeneration compounds slowly at first, then suddenly becomes visible everywhere at once! In soil, trust, economics, resilience, and people’s imagination of what’s possible.

Five years of regeneration in the Hyderabad Collective is rewarding us now.

This weekend, 112 kg of vegetables were harvested from the Hyderabad Collective.

This outcome is significant given the context.

The land was previously considered unsuitable for agriculture, having been overgrazed, ecologically degraded, and located in the driest mandal in the state. It is currently experiencing an intense heatwave.

Despite these constraints, the land provided us with abundance.

This is the result of 5 years of regeneration. By restoring soil organic matter, the land’s water retention capacity, and maintaining continuous cover and crop diversity, the system stabilises against thermal and hydric stress.

The 112 kg harvest is one data point within this process. It signals that self-sufficiency can emerge when interventions align with ecological function.

We are not fully there yet.

But what has been demonstrated is critical:
- The land can hold water again
- Food can be grown
- Homes can exist in alignment with the terrain

At a time when urban development optimises for 300 people per acre, this is a landscape operating at 2 people per acre — closer to the density of traditional villages.

Join us in this journey.

One of the most meaningful parts of reconnecting with the land is returning to festivals that worship ancient spirits of the forest.
At Poomaale Collective, we are beginning to feel our dependence, our smallness, our place within something vast, something older than our knowing.
