OUR GREATEST STRENGTH IS ALSO OUR GREATEST WEAKNESS:

On the face of it this statement appears completely illogical and contradictory. But let us dive deeper into the essence of it to understand what it means.
We draw power from our strengths. For someone it is enormous wealth of money, property, precious possessions, etc. For some others it is our network and contact of powerful people like politicians, senior government officials, police and so on. For still others it is their Sharp Intellect and knowledge of any particular field, be it medicine, engineering, etc. For still others it may be physical strength. The list can go on and on.
Now Human tendency is to pile on what they perceive as their strengths. for example if a person thinks money is his strength he tries to accumulate more and more of it, Those who find strength in knowledge load themselves with more and more of it.
let us take a hypothetical case of a person being so rich that he can buy anything he wants and there is so much wealth that he has to worry about parking it securely. So he parks his money in bank accounts or in big SAFEs in his house, he hires armed security guards to secure the money.
He starts to think that money is the panacea of all human suffering and can give him a secure and comfortable life. BUT IS IT REALLY TRUE? A rich man too has friends, relatives, children as all people have. sooner or later the excess wealth begins to ooze out as non essential expenditure, exhibition to enhance social status and so on. The man wants to make the life of his children, wife and close ones comfortable, so he buys the things desired by them even before the desire crops up in their conscious mind. children and family members begin to feel a sense of entitlement and lose sense of responsible and wise spending of wealth. Since the man has too much excess wealth he tries to fill up any gap of values in his progeny by pumping extra money. The people around him get deeply attached to the money they have never toiled to earn, and wants become needs and desires start growing in leaps and bounds and since the desires are immediately fulfilled the people lack patience, forbearence, humility, sense of sacrifice and simplicity. Selfishness develops. slowly family relations get based on money rather than love for each other, further fuelling greed, acquisitiveness, jealousy and arrogance. Now people who come in contact with this person or his children are also dazzled by wealth and they stick with him because of greed of money, they appear like friends, but in reality they are also avaricious beings full of greed, flattery and self interest. so this wealth creates a big group of friends, relatives and associates all glued to gether because of wealth.
Now gradually this person begins to realise the ingenuity, futility of these connects as there is no heart to heart bond, but his attachment with money leads him to try and hide his wealth. He becomes suspicious of his friends, relatives and close ones and they sense it and become insecure because of this.
Now as he hides his wealth his close ones start to devise ways to extract it by hook or by crook. deficit of human values leads to growth of negative human values and in extreme cases criminality also.
A stage can also arise that the same excess wealth that was supposed to secure a comfortable life for a person becomes a source of false relationships, lies, greed, jealousy, anger and in extreme circumstances also life threat and insecurity.
And it started off as a source of security. That is why our shastras say :
ज्ञानी भोगे ज्ञान से |
शक्तिशाली शक्ति से |
धनवान धन से |
In truth even spiritual wealth when accumulated becomes a source of suffering eventually. A person who has realised this truth and gained this wisdom does not even desire moksha. He constantly empties himself out, remains surrendered in His Master, Lives moment to moment, Does not even desire accolades and recognition.
He goes into anonymity seeking refuge only in his Inner Master , as the Sahaj Marg prayer says:
" O Master!
Thou art the real goal of human life,
We are yet but slaves of wishes putting bar to our advancement,
Thou art the only god and power
to bring us upto that state!

On the auspicious occasion of Holi my best wishes for all. may the true spirit of this festival be imbibed in us. May we be able to dive deeper into the essence of this great festival once we are done with a splash of colour and a glass of bhang thandai.
For my younger friends i wish to go into history if you are not aware of the origins of this festival.
The story is of one demon king Hiranyakashyap who wished to be worshipped as god, and who was all powerful. people who refused to recognize him as GOD and worship him were ruthlessly liquidated. Whats more he wanted all signs of people's existing love and devotion for Lord Vishnu to be obliterated and he had most temples desecrated. His was a rule of fear. Like any Mortal he desired a son who would carry on his legacy once he was done, because he new he could not be immortal in spite of his infinite powers. His wife was a devout vaishnavite, but because of her Husband's obstinacy she kept her devotion within her heart. Soon a son was born to Hiranyakashyapu names Prahlad. prahlad was a soul of very high calibre, innocent and pure, free from egotism. Very soon the inherent devotion in Prahlada came to surface and he became an ardent bhakta of vishnu. When Hiranyakashyap came to know this he was furious. he tried to reason with his son, but had no reply to Prahlad's questions which could only be answered by a self realized soul, so he tried to intimidate prahlad. Intimidation did not work because Prahlad knew no fear he was surrendered to divine.
When all his efforts to have his son become his devotee failed, Hiranyakashapu decided to have his son killed. He had Prahlad thrown off a cliff, only to find him back alive without a scratch on his body, he tried to poison him, but failed, he tried to have his head chopped off but that too didnot work. now Prahlad was not his son to him, he was a threat to him who could set an example for all to rebel against him, So finally he summoned Holika his sister who had a boon that she couldnot be burnt by fire. he has a pyre lit, in which holika sat with little Prahlad in her lap. To everyone's surprise Holika turned to ashes whereas prahlad came out unscathed.
Holika dahan performed a day before the actual play with colours is done as a mark of burning of holika. The next day is celebrated with colours as a mark of joy, because the next day a furious Hiranya kashyapu decided to kill prahlad himself and challenged prahlad to invoke Lord to protect him. Hiranya was blessed with many boons and it was impossible for any human being, devata, yaksha, animal or lord himself whether on land or in heavens or in water to kill him. he had asked his boons very brilliantly and used his enormous mental powers and will power to become invincible, but couldnot subjugate his own ego. When he was about to kill Prahlada, Lord appeared, half lion half human, neither from air , nor from water, not from land , but from within a pillar, ne used no weapons ( because Hiranya was protected from all weapons), but tore apart hiranya's belly after forcing him on his lap, useing his lion claws. And thus came to end the reign of terror. People breathed free and were filled with joy. Thus the next day is celebrated with colours.
THIS IS THE STORY BEHIND HOLI FESTIVAL, but now i would like to delve into essence of it. It is true that before we are born our religion is decided and we are conditioned according to belief systems of our ancestors and parents. So in essence most of us are religious. Our commitment to religion is going to temples or any other place of worship according to our ways of worship, following the process of worship as taught to us, celebrating our festivals according to the legacy handed down to us, and so on.

However these festivals and the story behind them carry deep message which are almost always missed by us because of our obsession with the way of celebrating them and the enjoyment and socializing factors associated with them. If we are to understand the moral of holi, firstly prahlad was born in a society of fear, where people had subdued the voice of their conscience either because of fear of death, or because of greed of associating with a brutal power and encashing the benefits. Prahlad being a pure being, uncorrupted by greed or fear or egotism and naturally inclined to connect with the divine source within was not affected by these. He was alone who truly was devoted to god to an extent that his mortal life didnot matter in the process, He alone was one whose Viveka and wisdom associated with it shone forth and dispelled the darkness cause by ignorance of masses and kings of those times. And to follow his inner voice he had to face challenges all through, but his values and ethics and conviction associated with them was imprinted in him, and even when alone he never deserted the dharma, he never gave excuse of his life threat. It required enormous courage to stand all by himself for invisible values and divinity which appeared powerless in his times. finally the times changed. and dharma prevailed.
Today we are religious perhaps, but are we truly following dharma. Are we true to ourselves, are we ready to take the path of thorns in our life if that path is the only path showing divinity or we conveniently change track for our comfort. I know my views will not be popular, but no society becomes enlightened and evolved unless its members are ready to introspect honestly and correct themselves. It is rather unfortunate that we have come to equate development with material well being, technological development, popularity, intellectual brilliance, personality development and things like these only. These things are the Hirnayakashyapu of today. Today there is no hiranyakashyapu as one person, but he has made home in each one of us as our greed for power, fear of consequences of leading a pious life, desire for fame and acknowledgement from majority of people, desire to be seen as greater than others, ingratitude, lack of viveka. With such a baggage we indulge in being religious.
We often console ourselves and say that no man is good or bad, but the times are good or bad. To me there cannot be a bigger lie and self deception. The fact us that time is impartial, it doesnot change its speed according to circumstances. It is constant. So how can something which is constant be bad. Can we say Sun is Hotter during summer because we feel more heat? or is it that the earths axis makes us feel sun's heat more at certain times and less at certain times and this process is constant, so is sun's heat. We focus on improving our destiny which is our perception of how we feel in our times. If we are comfortable with our time we say it is good and vice versa, But seldom do we realize that time which is limited for us is in our hands not to change things around us to make life pleasant, but to change things within us to enable us to evolve, purify, simplify and become Real Masters of ourselves rather than remaining slaves of our prejudices, fears, desires, egotism, etc.
The day this wisdom dawns on us and we embark on the real journey of life we would be twice born, and every moment of our life would be holi, diwali, eid, christmas, because there would be divine splendour within us being allowed to shine forth because of our real devotion to the One and Only Master within us.

My views may sound contrarian, but i like to add majority may win us seats of power, majority is always drawn into convenient ways, to climb mount everest one has to have the courage to be able to trek alone without any support system. We cant take cities there, so the journey of self realization is never comfortable and enjoyable but it makes us what we are here to become. May we awaken for once in life before it is too late for us.
