Tamil Nadu just gave paddy farmers the biggest incentive hike in state history. Here's the math behind it. 🌾
The 2026-27 paddy season opened September 1, days after CM C. Joseph Vijay announced the state's top-up was rising to "an unprecedented level in the history of Tamil Nadu."
The data:
Fine-grade paddy incentive: ₹289/quintal, up from ₹156 — an 85% jump in one year (our own calculation). Combined with the Centre's price, farmers now get ₹2,750/quintal
Common paddy: ₹2,600/quintal. Sugarcane: ₹4,000/tonne, including a ₹709.50 state top-up
Last season (2025-26) was Tamil Nadu's highest-ever paddy procurement: 64.2 lakh tonnes, 16.22 lakh tonnes more than the year before
Six weeks into the new season: 1.17 lakh tonnes bought, 20,196 farmers already paid (as of September 20)
Over the previous five years combined, the state paid out ₹2,185 crore in incentives — this year's single jump on fine paddy alone is bigger than most of those years put together
Why it matters: the incentive keeps paddy farming viable against rising costs, even as Tamil Nadu's own finances stay tight — something the Chief Minister has openly acknowledged. It's a bigger bill for TNCSC, the agency that buys, stores and mills the grain, but it also means fuller rice reserves for ration shops.
Two friction points to watch: the Centre already rejected one Tamil Nadu request this year to relax paddy moisture norms — a recurring dispute that can see grain rejected at the mill gate even when the price is good. And Tamil Nadu says ₹541.27 crore in central rice-subsidy reimbursements is still pending, from a request made in July.
What's next: procurement continues for months. Farmers can report any irregularity at a centre through the Uzhavar Udhavi Maiyam WhatsApp line, 9500801465. A record price. A season still being written.
