The value of "Invisible Progress."
I once watched a stonecutter at work. He hammered away at a giant rock, perhaps a hundred times, without as much as a crack showing in it.
To an outsider, it looked like he was failing. Every strike seemed wasted. Every minute spent sweating under the sun looked like "lost" productivity.
Then, on the 101st blow, the rock split in two.
It wasn’t that specific blow that did it. It was the 100 strikes that came before.
In our careers, we often feel like we are hitting a rock that won't break.
- We send 50 applications and get 50 silences.
- We post content for a month and see three likes.
- We build a product and the first iteration flops.
We live in a "results-only" culture that celebrates the 101st blow but ignores the first 100. We call it "overnight success" because we weren't there for the 5:00 AM starts or the moments of quiet doubt.
The Lesson: Don't confuse a lack of visible results with a lack of progress. You are not "failing" to break the rock; you are weakening the internal structure of the challenge.
If you feel like you’re hitting a wall today, keep swinging. Your 101st blow is coming, and it will only work because of the work you’re doing right now.
