The region had remained wild and unexplored until the latter half of the 19th century when ambitious planters from various parts of Europe began plantations here. John Daniel Munro, a British planter, created the North Travancore Land Planting & Agricultural Society in 1879. Members of this society started cultivation of crops, including coffee, cardamom, cinchona, and sisal in various parts of the region. Later, when tea was found to be the ideal crop for the region, much of the other cultivation was abandoned in its favour. However, Shanthanpara continues to be a cultivation ground primarily for cardamom.Over the years, the plantations and estate bungalows have been attracting those who crave a break from the routine fare of commercial tourism.
