Welcome back to July 1986 in Kashmir..

For Part 2, I am sharing the raw sounds of the Wanvun..
​No musical instruments are needed when the voices of your loved ones rise in unison. This traditional folk chorus by the ladies is the soundtrack to every true Kashmiri wedding, especially the Mehandi Raat. It’s the sound of collective joy, heritage, and deep blessings. ❤️

The Art of Krool (क्रूल).. Part 1

​My mamu recently rescued the VCR tapes from my parents’ wedding in July 1986.. the last wedding our family celebrated in Kashmir. I received the footage on a pendrive yesterday, and I have been in absolute awe ever since. The clarity is weathered by forty years of time, but the emotions are at an all-time peak..

There was a time when wedding home’s entrance was transformed into a canvas of blessings, hand-painted with love to announce a wedding (krool). Today, convenience has replaced this with printed signages, and the art is slowly fading into memory.

​Rescuing this clip from old video cassettes feels so special. Watching the hands that painted these welcome signs forty years ago, and catching a glimpse of my young beautiful mom back is ❤️

Growing up away from your motherland means falling in love with a place through the nostalgia of your parents. You inherit the love, the ache, and the longing ..
​This audio hit deeply because the question "Ghar kahan hai?" doesn't have an easy answer. But standing in the valley for the first time, I realized... my heart has always known the way back.. ❤️
