This weekend, we're cooking Assam, At Home — a small exploration of the quieter, lesser-seen food of Assamese home kitchens.

Khar, khorisa, shutki, black sesame, red rice and pitha — ingredients and techniques that tell stories of a cuisine far beyond the handful of Assamese dishes that usually travel outside the state.

We had researched, tested and provisioned this menu before we fully understood the scale of the floods unfolding in Assam. Going ahead and selling it as though nothing had changed didn't sit right with us.

So we're cooking what we had planned, but a little differently.

50% of our profits from every dish ordered from this weekend's menu will go towards flood-relief efforts in Assam.

This weekend, we're setting The Shared Table.

A Rath Yatra menu inspired by the shared culinary traditions of Odisha and Bengal.

The more we researched, the more we found cuisines that spoke the same language—mustard, coconut, seasonal produce, fish, gentle spices, and familiar techniques—yet arrived at dishes that were unmistakably and proudly their own.

That felt worth celebrating.

This menu is our small exploration of where Odia and Bengali food feel familiar, yet remain beautifully their own.

THE MONSOON TABLE

The first proper rains deserved Bhuni Khichuri.

Yesterday I spent far too many words trying to explain why Mama Bari felt like the right theme for this weekend.

Today, I'll let the menu do the talking.

Even the cover is our attempt at remembering a Bengali summer vacation. The little things that quietly lived around the food: afternoons that refused to end, games left unfinished, comics borrowed from cousins, and the comforting certainty that tomorrow would look exactly the same.

Looking at the menu now, I realise almost every dish is trying to recreate a different part of those summers. Some recipes came straight from our grandmothers. Some are dishes we wish somebody had cooked for us back then. A couple wandered much further than nostalgia usually allows, because memory isn't the only thing that comes home. Curiosity does too.

In hindsight, that perhaps was the whole point of this menu.

Hope this one finds its way to your table this weekend.

Every year, around this time, Bengal celebrates Jamai Shoshti. At home, though, we've always celebrated Shontan Shoshti instead.

Shontan in Bangla simply means your own children.

It took me years to realise how beautiful that was.

There aren't many rituals that celebrate your children simply because they're yours. Not because it's their birthday. Not because they've achieved something. Not because they've gotten married. Just because they exist, and they're loved.

That's the tradition Ma chose for us. It's the one we've chosen to carry forward at Breaking Basmati.

Family, after all, is sometimes given and sometimes chosen. It grows with parents, siblings, partners, friends and everyone else who finds a place at your table.

This weekend, we hope our Shontan Shoshti menu becomes a small part of that table.
