The Swayam Story: A Journey of Two IT Engineers to Empower Kitchens Across Pune
It has been a remarkable journey for "Swayam Foods", as it has become a staple in more than two thousand kitchens across Pune City in just a short time. Rashmi and Bhupesh Deshmukh, life partners and former IT professionals, made a bold move during the pandemic by quitting their thriving careers to start this venture.
Many people have asked about the reason for this drastic change, particularly why they chose such a seemingly unglamorous and repetitive business. The truth is, despite its unglamorous nature, this venture addresses a crucial aspect of every household in India - flours. Chapattis, Phulkas, Rotis, Parathas, and Puris are an integral part of almost every meal, and the key to their preparation lies in the flours used (wheat, millets, and pulses). As a working woman, Rashmi wanted her Chapattis/Rotis to remain soft and fresh until lunchtime, but she was disappointed with the results of the readymade wheat flour options available in the market. She eventually turned to getting her wheat ground at the local chakki, but this only led to more problems with consistency in grain quality, flour fineness, and hygiene. This led Rashmi and Bhupesh to conduct a survey, and they were surprised to find that both the options available to the people (readymade flours from grocery shops and local chakki grinding) left them unhappy. There were various reasons cited, such as the flour not being fresh, lack of taste, presence of preservatives, difficulty in making soft Chapattis, and the Chapattis not remaining soft for a long time. Determined to solve this problem, the duo did extensive research and found a solution. They set out to improve grain quality, implement grinding on demand, and prioritize hygiene. With time, effort, and passion, Rashmi and Bhupesh have created a solution to an age-old problem and made it a part of every kitchen's daily routine. They have truly embraced their entrepreneurial spirit and are empowering kitchens across Pune City with their product
