Some discoveries are not just old papers. They are pieces of legacy.
We recently came across a 70-year-old handwritten transaction note dated 8/9/1956 from Shah Popatlal Hiralal Company, a nostalgic reminder of how deeply rooted our journey with heritage rice varieties truly is.
The note records the purchase of Ambemohar rice from Mr Anand Sakharam Khatpe, a farmer from Nasrapur. Three large bags weighing 118 kg, 130 kg, and 120 kg -a total of 368 kg- were bought at Rs. 128 per quintal. That means Ambemohar rice was sold at just Rs. 1.28 per kilo in 1956.
Jairaj Group has always nurtured a deep appreciation for India’s rich heritage rice varieties, including rare and traditional grains such as Chimanasal, Ambemohar, Gobindobhog, Seeraga Samba and so on. With a strong commitment to preserving authentic regional rice cultures, the Group continues to value the legacy, aroma, and nutritional heritage of these indigenous varieties, many of which are gradually disappearing over time.
Back then, rice travelled in massive 120-kilo sacks. Today, the same legacy reaches homes in carefully packed 1 kg packets within minutes from quick commerce platforms. Packaging, logistics, and pricing have evolved dramatically but the soul of the business remains unchanged.
What once sold for Rs. 1.28 a kilo is today valued at nearly Rs. 220 a kilo. Yet beyond the price rise lies something far more valuable: trust built over generations.
For decades, our family has continued this journey with the same values - honesty, quality, relationships, and a deep respect for traditional rice varieties.
Times have changed. Values haven’t.
