Just look at this healthy beautiful moth resting on one of the peaches harvested at the farm. Sights like this give us so much confidence in our journey at Prayaas. In conventional, chemically-treated orchards, these sensitive creatures are often the first to disappear. But in a regenerative system, we work with nature rather than against it—and in return, we’re gifted with these moments of joy.

A day late, but this felt like the perfect way to say Happy Mother’s Day to Mother Nature. Much love and gratitude! 🌱🙏

Yayy! Our Jamun trees are in the flowering stage for the first time :) we had planted 8 Jamun trees in 2021 and out of those 2 are in the early flowering stage! Jamun trees are an excellent addition to our farm. They are evergreen, have a beautiful canopy, hard wood, and a long life native tree which makes them a true ecosystem builder.

Let’s see if we get to enjoy the yummy jamun fruit from our trees this year 🤞

Peach picking at Prayaas! What fun 🍑

And we took our time… just how it should be done. Fruits should naturally ripen on the trees itself and not using chemicals to increase shelf life and make them look pretty.

All our peaches might not looking alike and some trees have given in abundance while some have suffered infestation also. But that’s how it is when you work with nature. These peaches trees have been fed with nothing other than farm prepared compost and a thick layer of mulch - that too chipped at our farm using wood from trees growing at our farm. This is true organic and sustainable. We don’t need any organic stamp of approval… our food speaks for itself 🍑❤️

Happy Baisakhi 🌾
We are truly feeling blessed to be celebrating this day by harvesting the golden wheat ears of the beautiful ‘Paigambari’ which are now ripe and full. The Paigambari also known as Sona Moti is an ancient heirloom wheat which is almost forgotten and lost in the modernized and commercialized wheat industry.

The team at the farm was initially concerned about the smaller size of the wheat ear - which means lesser number of grains per plant… but I think they are also appreciating the fact that good things come in small packages 🙂

They are recognising our little ‘Prayaas’ to grow more of our desi varieties that are resilient to the climate crisis and ensure food security. And by consuming such real indigenous food we all can contribute to keeping the seed alive… they may offer lower yields but are healthier for us and for the planet.

Growing vegetables at Prayaas always seemed like a daunting task! Since we manage this farm remotely, and visit only twice a month, we were not able to give vegetables the care and close management they demand - careful watering, soil prep and timely planting and harvesting.

This year, however, our farm gave us the signs to give vegetables a chance. Our soil is indeed looking much better, our smaller gardens and planting beds are well managed and we are getting better at timing the tasks involved.

We planted a few different varieties of tomatoes (the saplings were started at home and then transplanted at the farm). With a good dose of farm prepared compost and a nice layer of mulch, these plants are thriving. We’re a bit worried about the erratic weather patterns and the untimely rain and storms that won’t be ideal for these lovely tomato plants. But for now, we are enjoying the fruits of our labour.

Just look at this army of ladybirds on one of our peach trees! The tree is infested with aphids. But thanks to the ladybirds, we can just sit back and relax while they do the pest control.

Ladybirds are one of farmer’s best friends… did you know that one ladybird can eat as many as 5000 aphids in its lifetime!!!

We have had a bountiful season of winter greens at the farm. While bok choy and Chinese broccoli (G*i lan) are now flowering, lettuce is still going pretty good. I have tried to be super creative and come up with new ways to prepare lettuce salad… but I am finally running out of ideas!

We had planted the lettuce seeds in October last year right next to the veg garden fence which has the perennial Butterfly pea (Aparajita) growing all over it. Aparajita is from the legume family and it helped lettuce with the much-needed nitrogen as it dropped its leaves and shed nitrogen fixing root nodules in the soil over the winters. We also kept adding a good dose of farm-prepared compost to these beds.

Basically, we just took care of our soil and the rest happened on it its own :)

The edges of our pathways are currently lined with a beautiful carpet of clover! It’s a sign of natural ecological succession that takes place in a permaculture system when you let nature lead the way.

It’s been quite a journey from finding parthenium (the not-so-good w**d) everywhere to now finding newer varieties of w**ds that are doing their work silently but surely… helping build the soil fertility bit by bit.

Btw, this Clover is entirely self-seeded, just showed up on its own when the ecosystem was ready! We more than welcome this voluntary plant in our gardens - it’s nitrogen fixing, a fantastic living mulch, it’s edible and looks soooo green and pretty. Are you spotting any new w**ds in your garden?

Harvesting peas is soooo much fun! With the spring season arriving, the peas have started to form inside the pods and they are ready for harvest.

This is first time, we have been a little bit more serious and disciplined about growing peas. We planted the seeds closely on the edge of our garlic beds and put up some nets for support. Other than that, peas don’t need any additional compost or manure, not much watering and no pests also! And just like that, the plants are laden with beautiful pods :)

Our very own flower show happening this spring at Prayaas farm! When nature decides to put up a show… you just watch in awe. On display:

1. The much awaited Peach blossoms. Every spring we look forward to these and then the wait for the fruit begins.

2. Winter yellow jasmine bringing some golden sunshine to the farm - a wonderful perennial flowering vine.

3. Plum blooms - love these white flowers on the plum trees. This is the first time we are seeing our plum trees flowering… let’s see if we get the fruit too!

4. Yayy for w**ds - sow thistle. Spotted this while walking around the farm. Apparently this is edible and medicinal too!

5. Cosmos - soon these pink ones will make way for the orange summer cosmos. Have to plant the seeds this week.

6. Pea - not a good pic but we are indeed having a good peas season this year.

7. Crown daisy - these are super easy to grow and look lovely when planted densely. These are edible too! (Talking of edible flowers, we also have lots of Nasturtiums growing but forgot to take a pic)

8. Of course all brassicas and radish families are flowering now and they are a haven for bees and all kinds of pollinators.

9. Last but not the least- The quintessential winter bloom - Rose. These rose plants were among the first few plants we introduced at Prayaas.

Our turmeric has been harvested and processed into the most aromatic turmeric powder that has a beautiful colour. We are so so grateful to mother nature for giving us this abundance of pure turmeric powder that has been grown completely naturally. The turmeric has been washed and just parboiled that gives this powder a vibrant colour and the most robust flavour. Our mother tubers were sourced from Uttarakhand and we have been growing and seed saving the same turmeric for 4 years now.

Turmeric is a long but rewarding crop and makes for a wonderful addition to our food forest. This time we have harvested it after two years. We have kept aside the seed tubers in sand and will plant them again later this year.
