Nirvana Shatakam is a profound six-verse hymn by Adi Shankaracharya that declares the self as pure consciousness, transcending the mind, body & all human limitations, ultimate in a state of blissful, non-dual realization. Each verse reinforces this identity by negating identification with various physical and mental aspects, concluding with the mantra, "Chidananda Rupa Shivoham Shivoham" (I am the form of pure consciousness & bliss, I am Shiva).
It utilizes the "Neti-Neti" philosophy to guide the seeker toward understanding their inner nature as one with Shiva.
मनो बुद्ध्यहंकार चित्तानि नाहं न च श्रोत्र जिह्वे न च घ्राण नेत्रे|
न च व्योम भूमिर्न न तेजो न वायुः चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोहम् शिवोहम् ॥
I am not the mind, the intellect, the ego or the memory. I am not the ears, the tongue, the nose or the eyes. I am not space, earth, fire, or wind. I am the form of pure consciousness & bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva.
न च प्राणसंज्ञो न वै पञ्चवायुः न वा सप्तधातुर्न वा पञ्चकोशः।
न वाक् पाणि पादं न चोपस्थ पायुः चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोहम् शिवोहम्॥
I am not the vital life breath (Prana), nor am I the five internal winds. I am not the seven tissues of the body nor am I the five bodily sheaths. I am not the organs of speech, hands, feet, or the organs of elimination & reproduction. I am the form of pure consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva.
न मे द्वेषरागौ न मे लोभमोहो न मे वै मदो नैव मात्सर्यभावः।
न धर्मो न चार्थो न कामो न मोक्षः चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोहम् शिवोहम्॥
I have no hatred or attachment, nor do I have greed or delusion. I have no pride, nor do I have any feeling of jealousy. I am not bound by duty (Dharma), wealth (Artha), desire (K**a), or liberation (Moksha). I am the form of pure consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva.
न पुण्यं न पापं न सौख्यं न दुःखम् न मन्त्रो न तीर्थं न वेदा न यज्ञाः।
अहं भोजनं नैव भोज्यं न भोक्ता चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोहम् शिवोहम्॥
I have neither virtue nor sin, neither pleasure nor pain. I do not need sacred chants, holy places, scriptures, or rituals. I am neither the experience of consuming, nor the object consumed, nor the consumer myself. I am the form of pure consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva.
न मे मृत्युशंका न मे जातिभेदः पिता नैव मे नैव माता न जन्म|
न बन्धुर्न मित्रं गुरुर्नैव शिष्यः चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोहम् शिवोहम्॥
I have no fear of death, nor do I have any distinctions of caste. I have no father, no mother & I have no birth. I have no relatives, no friends, no teacher (guru), and no disciple. I am the form of pure consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva.
अहं निर्विकल्पो निराकाररूपो विभुत्वाच्च सर्वत्र सर्वेन्द्रियाणाम्।
न चासंगतं नैव मुक्तिर्न मेयः चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोहम् शिवोहम्||
I am free from all doubts & I am formless. I am all-pervading and exist everywhere, behind all the senses. I am neither attached to anything, nor am I liberated, nor am I something that can be measured. I am the form of pure consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva.
