The North East Store

The North East Store An Online Store for original produce from NorthEast India- unique foods, traditional weaves & handicraft And miss it when they are away.

The North East Store was born of a simple fact: People love where they are from. We are a group of people from the North East of India who, through the course of our lives, have lived outside of the North East and missed Home and all its comforts. We found many others in the same predicament. For too long we made do with bringing back foodstuffs and other unique items back from our too few and far

between holidays. Unfortunately, as much as we could carry, it was never enough. And when airlines rationed our check in luggage weight to 15kgs that was the last straw! So we thought... Hey, if you can't go Home, how about getting Home to you? Our store is an attempt to make you feel better by doing exactly that, bringing Home to you. The North East Store carries a selection of food items unique to the North East as well as Handloom and Handicrafts of the states of the region. We strive to showcase as many hard to come by products for people not native to the region to discover, learn about and enjoy. We at The North East Store source our products from local farmers & producers and NGOs, Government groups & Self Help Groups supporting local farmers, weavers and producers. All products are locally sourced, helping not only users find these products outside of the North East but also to expand the local nature of these products and get them out to a wider market not bound by physical markets.

When monsoons come 🌧️ the cravings are always for something simple and wholesome 🍛 For us, that’s our favourite classic - pork with mustard leaves! Zero added oil, light yet filling! Quick Recipe below 👇

- half kg fresh pork (can even used smoked pork)
- one bunch mustard leaves
- one large onion, chopped
- 2 tablespoons of ginger garlic and chilli paste
- salt to taste

How to make:
- In a pressure cooker , add all the fat pieces to extract oils
- Once there is enough oil for frying, add in the onions, followed by the ginger, garlic chilli paste and fry till golden brown
- Add in the meat pieces of the pork and fry till lightly browned all over
- Add about 2 teacups of water and put the pressure cooker lid on and whistle till cooked (about 4-5 whistles)
- Remove the pot from the fire and once the pressure goes off, add in the mustard leaves. They should be roughly chopped, leaving the leafy parts large
- Put the pot back on the fire and cook for another 5 mins till the leaves soften but are still green and lightly crunchy.

And done! Enjoy with a steaming plate of rice! 😃🍛🍚

Phan and Tungtap (Boiled Potato & fermented fish chutney) - Its a complete meal by itself. The dish has become so iconic that it is now served in traditional food cafés and featured as a must-try local delicacy for visitors.

Back in the day, when fresh fish was not available year-round our communities developed methods of fermenting fish. This became the beloved tungtap. At the same time, potatoes grew well in the cool climate and were easy to boil and serve.

Over generations, people discovered that the simple, filling taste of boiled potatoes paired perfectly with the intense, smoky, salty flavour of tungtap. What began as a practical meal for farming families became one of Meghalaya's most loved comfort foods. Today, eating phan and tungtap, paired with fresh, raw, local herbs, is often associated with home, tradition, and Khasi identity.

We love these straight forward stir-fries which are life savers when you need to rustle something up in 15-20 mins, that's also guaranteed to satifsy the taste buds!

Here we have a meatier strip of smoke pork, so we need to add some oil to out pan (not needed if using a fatty smoked pork strip, of course!) The other ingredients used here are an onion, tomato, chillies, garlic chives, and capsicum. You can add other veggies of choice as well!

DM us for the link to order the smoked pork! 😃

The joy and privilege of having your own mango tree and enjoying the bounty of nature is unmatched! 🥭 Those who have this are truly blessed in our opinion!!

While waiting for them to ripen on the tree, raw mango chutneys are what makes humid, monsoon day lunches delicious!

When half ripe, the simple grated raw mango with king chilli chutney is amazing and the other chutney has fish mint leaves to balance out the sour tango was of tender raw mangoes.
