Remember those scions Akshay was preparing in Part 1?

Here they are, getting grafted onto a Robusta rootstock.

The scions are Coffea stenophylla, Sln.5A and Sln.11. The rootstock is Robusta. The experiment is definitely not random, despite what Akshay says. 😏

Now we wait and see what happens.

We are back with some random experiments.

This time, Akshay is preparing scions of Coffea stenophylla, Sln.5A and Sln.11 for grafting.

He says it’s random. We know better. 😏

There’s always a reason behind these things, even if he doesn’t tell us right away.

Follow along for Part 2 to see what rootstock we are grafting on !

Liberica. Excelsa. Libex.
Field observations show how Libex expresses traits from both parent species, fruit and seed size, parchment thickness, clustering, and climate adaptability often sit between Liberica and Excelsa.

A closer look at hybrid and its parent species, from the ongoing SICC Labs field studies.

Coffea benghalensis is setting crop.

This is not Arabica. Not Robusta. It is one of the lesser-studied wild coffee species from tropical Asia, historically treated under Psilanthus and later brought into Coffea through botanical research.

There is very little published work on its cup quality. What does exist points to its chemical interest: caffeine, polyphenols, chlorogenic-acid-related compounds and other phytochemicals have been identified in the species.

So the question for us is simple: do we make more saplings, or find out what is in the cup?
