An article in The Hindu examines how the judiciary has treated two very different categories of animals — elephants and street dogs — and asks an important question:
Should an animal’s species, status or relationship with humans determine how much protection and consideration they receive?
Equal consideration does not necessarily mean identical treatment. Different animals may have different needs, but their capacity to experience pain, fear, comfort and suffering deserves to be taken seriously.
The article also brings in philosopher Peter Singer’s principle of equal consideration of interests — a principle that challenges us to look beyond human convenience and ask:
What does the animal need?
What does the animal experience?
And are we giving that experience the moral importance it deserves?
For those of us who choose a compassionate, plant-based way of living, this is a reminder that veganism is not simply about what is on our plate.
It is about expanding our circle of consideration beyond ourselves. 🌱
Perhaps the real question is not “How useful is this animal to us?”
but “How can we coexist while respecting the animal’s inherent worth?” ❤️
