The Living Heritage: SKCRF’s Legacy in Documenting the Kannapuram Cattle Fair

The Kannapuram Cattle Fair in Tiruppur District is one of India’s most significant living livestock heritages. With a history spanning over 1,000 years, this annual market remains a vital link to the ancient pastoral traditions of the Tamil land.

As we observe the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026, we recognize the deep roots of this legacy. Ancient Sangam literature, such as "Pathitru Patthu" and "Tholkaappiyam," documents the cattle of the Kongar lands as far back as 300 BC, illustrating a 3,000-year-old bond between the people and the noble Kangayam breed.

The Work of SKCRF (2009–Present)

While the fair is ancient, the modern effort to document and preserve its cultural and genetic importance has been led by the Senaapathy Kangayam Cattle Research Foundation (SKCRF).

Since 2009, SKCRF has worked tirelessly to:
1. Document the Bio-Cultural Protocols of the livestock keepers.
2. Advocate for the "in-situ" conservation of the Kangayam breed.
3. Bridge the gap between traditional wisdom and modern science, collaborating with institutions like TANUVAS to protect the 35,000-year-old legacy of Indian grasslands.

A Continuing Legacy

Today, the Kangayam Cattle Research Station (KCRS) at Sathyamangalam stands as a beacon where tradition and technology converge. Each calf born and each herd tended recalls the legacy of the Kongu natives whose cattle were their wealth and cultural pride.

The 2026 Kannapuram Cattle Fair continues until April 30, 2026. It remains a wonderful opportunity for farmers and the public to engage with the Kangayam breed and celebrate the unbroken chain of Tamil Nadu’s pastoral heritage.

இந்தியக் கால்நடைகளின் அழிவா? ‘பாலினம் பிரிக்கப்பட்ட விந்து’ (Sex-Sorted Semen) தொழில்நுட்பம் - ஒரு பார்வை
இந்தியா உலகிலேயே மிகப்பெரிய மற்றும் பல்வேறு வகையான கால்நடைகளைக் கொண்ட நாடு. காங்கேயம், கிர், ஓங்கோல், உம்பளச்சேரி என நமது நாட்டு ரகங்கள் பல்லாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளாக நமது தட்பவெப்பநிலை, வறட்சி மற்றும் நோய்களைத் தாங்கி வளரும்படி நமது முன்னோர்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்டவை.
ஆனால், சமீபகாலமாக அரசு மற்றும் தனியார் நிறுவனங்களால் ஊக்குவிக்கப்படும் ‘பாலினம் பிரிக்கப்பட்ட விந்து’ (Sex-Sorted Semen) தொழில்நுட்பம், நமது கால்நடைகளின் பல்லுயிர் தன்மையை (Diversity) முற்றிலுமாக அழிக்கும் அபாயத்தைக் கொண்டுள்ளது. இது பால் உற்பத்தியை உயர்த்துவதாகக் கூறப்பட்டாலும், நீண்ட கால அடிப்படையில் பெரும் பாதிப்புகளை ஏற்படுத்தும்.
1. இந்தத் தொழில்நுட்பம் என்றால் என்ன?
பொதுவாக மாடுகள் சினைப்படும்போது 50% காளைக் கன்று, 50% பசுக்கன்று பிறக்க வாய்ப்புள்ளது. ஆனால் இந்தத் தொழில்நுட்பம் மூலம், விந்துவில் உள்ள குரோமோசோம்களை ஆய்வகத்தில் பிரித்து, 90% பசுக்கன்றுகளே பிறக்கும்படி செய்யப்படுகிறது.
2. ஏன் இது ஆபத்தானது?
• மரபணு அழிவு: இந்த முறையில் ஒரு சில "உயர்தர" காளைகளின் விந்து மட்டுமே நாடு முழுவதும் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. இதனால் பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான காளைகளுக்குப் பதில் ஒரு சில காளைகளின் மரபணு மட்டுமே பரவி, எதிர்காலக் கன்றுகள் நோய் எதிர்ப்புச் சக்தியை இழக்கும்.
• நாட்டு மாடு vs கலப்பின மாடு: நாட்டு மாடுகள் அதிக வெப்பத்தைத் தாங்கும், குறைந்த தீவனத்தில் வளரும், 15 ஆண்டுகள் வரை வாழும். ஆனால் கலப்பின மாடுகள் அதிக மருத்துவச் செலவு வைப்பவை, சீக்கிரம் இறந்துவிடுபவை.
• பருவநிலை மாற்றமும் ஆபத்தும்: உலகம் வெப்பமடைந்து வரும் சூழலில், நமது நாட்டு மாடுகள் மட்டுமே உயிர்வாழும் திறன் கொண்டவை. மரபணு ரீதியாக ஒரே மாதிரியான மாடுகளை உருவாக்கினால், ஒரு புதிய நோயோ அல்லது கடும் வறட்சியோ ஏற்பட்டால் அனைத்து மாடுகளும் ஒரே நேரத்தில் அழியும் அபாயம் உண்டு.
• விவசாயிகளின் உரிமை பறிபோதல்: இதுவரை காளைகளை வளர்த்து இனப்பெருக்கம் செய்த விவசாயிகளின் உரிமை பறிக்கப்பட்டு, அவர்கள் ஆய்வகங்களையும் கார்ப்பரேட் நிறுவனங்களையும் சார்ந்து இருக்க வேண்டிய நிலை ஏற்படும்.
3. ஒரு ஒப்பீடு (1951 - 2019):
முன்பு 70% ஆக இருந்த நமது நாட்டு மாடுகளின் எண்ணிக்கை இப்போது 36% ஆகக் குறைந்துவிட்டது. அதே சமயம் கலப்பின மாடுகள் 1% இல் இருந்து 28% ஆக உயர்ந்துள்ளது. இது நமது மண்ணின் தனித்துவமான கால்நடைச் செல்வத்தை நாம் இழந்து வருவதைக் காட்டுகிறது.
4. கோழி வளர்ப்பில் நாம் கற்ற பாடம்:
ஏற்கனவே கோழி வளர்ப்பில் நாட்டுக்கோழிகளை இழந்து, கம்பெனி கோழிகளை (Broiler) நம்பி இருக்கிறோம். அதே நிலை இப்போது மாடுகளுக்கும் வரப்போகிறது. நமது பாரம்பரிய ஏர் உழும் காளைகள் அழிந்து, விவசாயம் முழுமையாக இயந்திரங்களைச் சார்ந்ததாக மாறிவிடும்.
முடிவுரை:
இந்தியாவின் பலம் அதிகப் பால் தருவது மட்டுமல்ல, எத்தகைய சூழலையும் தாங்கி உயிர் வாழ்வதுதான். உற்பத்தி என்ற பெயரில் பன்முகத்தன்மையை அழிப்பது வளர்ச்சி அல்ல; அது எதிர்கால அழிவின் தொடக்கம். நமது மண்ணின் அடையாளமான நாட்டு மாடுகளைப் பாதுகாப்போம்.
