Came across this old 30A double-pole switch being used as an A/C disconnect and it got me thinking.

Was this a common setup before pull-out disconnects became the standard? I've seen plenty of pull-out disconnects over the years, but this was the first time I've run into one like this.

It also made me wonder how A/C equipment was typically protected back then. Were these switches commonly paired with fuses or breakers elsewhere, or was there a different approach to overcurrent protection compared to today's installations?

I'd love to hear from electricians who've been in the trade for a while. Is this something you used to see regularly, and around what era was it most common?

Working on a 1920s house always comes with surprises... and this one definitely caught me off guard! 😅

I knew the circuit was dead, but I still wasn't expecting to pull the outlet out and find SIX wires packed into the box.

For those of you who've worked on older homes, is this fairly common for wiring from that era, or did I just uncover one of those "what were they thinking?" moments?

I'd love to hear your thoughts—or see photos of the craziest wiring surprises you've run into!

Does this setup look safe to you?

I noticed this outlet has a powerline adapter plugged in, along with a 3-way multi-plug that's powering two other devices.

It works fine, but I'm wondering if this is considered safe for long-term use or if it's something that should be changed. My main concern is whether the extra adapters could overload the outlet or create a fire hazard.

Would you leave it as is, or is there a better way to set this up? I'd really appreciate any advice from those with electrical experience. Thanks!

Does this quote seem reasonable, or am I getting taken for a ride?

I was quoted $5,000 in labor to install a mini-split that I already purchased online. The indoor and outdoor units would be mounted only a few feet apart, with the outdoor unit sitting about 3 feet from the electrical panel.

The contractor said it would take a two-person crew about 6–8 hours to complete the installation.

That price seems incredibly high to me, but maybe I'm missing something.

For those who've had a mini-split installed recently:
• Is this a realistic labor quote?
• What did you pay?
• Would you get a few more estimates?

I'm also relatively handy and comfortable with home improvement projects. Is this a job that's reasonable for an experienced DIYer, or are there parts of the installation (vacuuming the lines, refrigerant work, electrical, etc.) that really make it worth hiring a professional?

I'd appreciate any advice or experiences before I make a decision. Thanks!
