At Castell’in Villa, tradition and restraint are a choice, not a trend. Princess Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa took over the estate in the 1980s, turning down easier paths in favor of a slow, rigorous vision rooted in old-school winemaking.

With the help of Matteo Altare and Federico Staderini, she vinifies Chianti Classico the way it used to be made—native yeasts, long macerations, and botti, not barriques. Coralia’s role goes beyond ownership—she’s a custodian of one of the most intellectually driven estates in the denomination. The wines reflect her thinking: precise, austere, and quietly powerful.

Located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Castell’in Villa’s vineyards lie in the southernmost stretch of Chianti Classico, where sandstone and Alberese limestone soils drive concentration and structure. Clay veins add aromatic lift and acidity—a signature of the estate’s Sangiovese.

Originally a medieval hamlet and outpost, the estate is now 300 hectares, of which 50 are under vine, all organically farmed. The site’s geological complexity and elevation translate into wines with depth and nerve. This is Berardenga at its most nuanced.

We take the phrase In media virtus quite seriously. Not white, not red—rosé is that perfect middle ground. Sure, chromotherapy works on Valentine’s Day, but great minds drink alike all year round.

Here are our top selections of serious, excellent rosés from northern to southern Italy:

🍷 Davide Carlone – Albarosa Colline Novaresi DOC Nebbiolo

🍷 Stefano Camilucci – Ammonites Rosé Franciacorta DOCG

🍷 Barone di Villagrande – Etna Rosato DOCG

Monforte d’Alba, where the Clerico legacy thrives, is located along the breathtaking chain of Serralunga and the Central Valley hills, at the tip of a V-shaped formation. This unique positioning influences both the style and distinct characteristics of Monforte wines. The region’s soil varies dramatically: to the east is Serralunga, with its deep, dark Sant’Agata Marl, while to the west lies La Morra, known for its younger soils that lend wines with powerful yet elegant bouquets. This geographic diversity imparts unique elements to Monforte wines, blending deep, red cherry flavors with rich structures—qualities that define the celebrated crus of Ginestra and Mosconi.

Clerico’s innovative spirit extended beyond his winemaking techniques; he was also the first in the region to build a modern “Napa-style” winery, sparking debate but firmly establishing his reputation as a pioneer.

Domenico Clerico’s journey began modestly with Dolcetto vines, today 75-year-old Dolcetto, but his commitment to innovation soon expanded his vineyard holdings to four distinguished crus: Bussia, Ginestra, Mosconi, and Bricco San Pietro. Just outside of Monforte, in the Baudana Cru, Domenico’s last vision was to create elegant Barolo in Serralunga. This dream led to the creation of Aeroplanservaj—“wild airplane”—a homage to his adventurous spirit.

Every grape, even for the Langhe Nebbiolo Capismee, originates from the four Monforte sites with vines averaging 25 years of age. Known as one of the original “Barolo Boys,” Clerico embraced green harvesting, shorter macerations, roto fermentors, and barriques, setting the stage for a generational shift in Barolo winemaking.

Today, the winery has evolved beyond this style, using techniques like parcel division, delicate extractions, and a range of wood vessel sizes to highlight each vineyard’s character and Monforte’s terroir. Barolo today is more approachable in its youth, and Clerico’s wines are especially vibrant, crisp, and expressive. While Barolo deepens with age, Clerico’s wines hold a unique promise of both drinkability and ageability, combining youthful allure with long-term potential. Oscar Arrivabene, who joined Clerico before his passing, continues this vision, affirming, “Domenico was the artist; we are the artisans.”

In 1997, Michela and Vittorio began their journey at Quercia al Poggio, a property with deep family roots. Vittorio, influenced by his grandfather’s winery, was advised by his father to finish his accounting studies at Quercia al Poggio, away from city distractions. He brought his girlfriend, Michela, who later became his wife.

When they took over the estate, it was in disarray. Determined, they replanted 12 of 15 hectares of vineyards, preserving 3 hectares of the 45-year-old “Le Cataste” vineyard for their Gran Selezione. Initially made only from Sangiovese, the Gran Selezione now includes Malvasia Nera to better reflect the vineyard’s character.

Vittorio’s thesis on environmental economics, which explored sustainable business practices within natural parks, now informs their estate management. They practice strict organic viticulture, focusing on soil health and biodiversity, and follow traditional wisdom, like lunar phases, for vineyard work. For Vittorio and Michela, wine embodies the dedication and passion of the people behind it, rooted in their personal history and respect for nature.

Quercia al Poggio, a 19th-century rural village, is perched at 400 meters above sea level in the Municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, which now includes Barberino Val d’Elsa. The estate, closer in proximity, microclimates, and landscapes to Castellina than Barberino, sits amidst rolling hills adorned with vineyards and olive trees, commanding attention alongside the renowned estates of Isole e Olena and Monsanto. The property, which forms part of a nature reserve, has a rich history dating back to the Pleistocene era when the sea covered the area now known as Poggibonsi. From here, you can see the towers of San Gimignano, about 100 km from the sea.

The complex includes an ancient convent of Vallombrosan monks from nearby Badia a Passignano. These monks, whose roots go back to 1039, left behind a legacy of respect for the land that still shapes everything done at Quercia al Poggio today. The vineyards are divided between northwest and southeast-facing slopes, with soils ranging from calcareous clay to galestro, schist, and volcanic elements. This unique combination of geography and climate allows for the production of wines with finesse, elegance, and balanced acidity, benefiting from slower maturation and late harvests. Surrounded by woods and natural air circulation, the estate enjoys cooler temperatures and a protected environment, free from many common vineyard pests.

Quercia al Poggio’s soils are rich in clay, limestone, galestro, schist, and volcanic elements, each contributing to the vibrant life of their wines. At the heart of their production is the Chianti Classico DOCG, a wine that matures in wooden barrels and is bottled after nearly three years of aging. The Quercia al Poggio Riserva offers a careful selection of Sangiovese, while their Cru, Quercia al Poggio Gran Selezione, is made from the finest Sangiovese grapes from the 45-year-old “Vigna le Cataste” vineyard.

In addition to Sangiovese, the Estate grows traditional Tuscan varietals like Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, and a small amount of Malvasia Nera, which adds unique characteristics to their blends. Their wines are fermented in cement and aged in large wooden barrels, focusing on choices meant to endure over time. Their wine philosophy is rooted in the land, with every decision made to respect the expression of their unique terroir and their surrounding environment.
