- Welcome to the fine wine and gourmet world of Sicily -

From Lapland Sweden to Sicily. After years in fashion I decided to change life completely, and Sicily was the key for it. With no plans, no job, no nothing and didn't speak the language I packed my bags and moved. First year noticed changes in my health and the high quality of Sicilian produce, so I opened a company to help Sicilian organic

producers on the European market. Here I also started down-sizing focusing on true values in life, now heading towards off-grid living. Channel and technology funded by Covid-19 funds received during lock down, to give back to the society. Sommelier and technical in my backpack. Red wine and brut passionate. Home sipping this Sicilian organic brut from the west coast 🥂🍃 This brut is a cru made of 100% Chardonnay. Funaro is a sustainable winery in the Trapani province inlands, a small town called Santa Ninfa.

🍇Winery: Funaro
🥂Wine: Metodo Classico Brut VSQ 2022
Aromas: Lemon peel, pineapple, yellow apple, jasmine, basil, bisquit, with a stronger sniff some toast and salt.
(Do note! Palate is individual).
Very nice long perlage and quite long finish.

To the next pop! 👌🥂

🍇 Winery visit 🍇 at organic Etna winery Terra Costantino 🍃🌋. A family owned winery producing wines over 40 years, but marketing and bottling started 2007. They also have sustainability certification.
Most of their wines are exported. All grapes are of course indigenous Etna grapes.

Cool thing is that in the cellar a window towards the mountain rock is opened. This window shows thousands of years of lava flows just under the building, and used as natural "air conditioner" to keep the winery cooled. You can feel a cool air coming in and some perfect humidity. You can see a photo just scrolling forward.

Took the full wine tasting which also included food. We tasted:
As starter their basic line called "deAetna:
1) 🥂Etna Bianco DOC 2023
80% Carricante, 15% Catarratto, 5% Minnella
2)🍷 Etna Rosé DOC 2024
90% Nerello Mascalese, 10% Nerello Cappuccio
3) 🍷Etna Rosso DOC
90% Nerello Mascalese, 10% Nerello Cappuccio

Then:
4) 🥂Contrada Praino, superior Etna white DOC, 2020
100% Carricante
5) 🥂Contrada Blandano, Etna white DOC, 2018
90% Carricante, 10% Catarratto
6) 🍷Contrada Blandano, Etna red DOC riserva
90% Nerello Mascalese, 10% Nerello Cappuccio

And at the end a nice surprise:
7) 🍷Rasola
A blend of all kinds of white and black grapes with ancient production style "throw in and pull out". The wine will be what it will be. Needed some time to open up, but was surprisingly good!

The location is Valverde, just 25 min drive from Catania. Did a technical course here couple of years ago.

To the next cin! 🥂🍷👌

Last Friday attended a very interesting tasting where dna lineage of four Italian grape varieties has been traced 🥂🍷Including Sicilian wines.

Divided in four groups we tasted main grape and then the "offspring" as they like to call it. You see each group in the following photos, starting up left.

A tasting organized by Onav Catania in collaboration with GRASPO which is the institute for these researches.

Following four grape groups were tasted:
1) Main grape Garganega, followed by;
- "Dorona" crossing of Garganega and Bermestia
- "Catarratto" crossing of Garganega and Montonico Bianco
- "Rosso Burgau" crossing of Garganega and Cavrara

2) Main grape Liseret, followed by;
- "Piccola Nera" crossing of Vulpea and Weisser- Heunisch
- "Chardonnay" crossing of W.Heunisch and Vulpea
- "Pinella" crossing of Ignoto and W.Heunisch

3) Main grape: Vulpea, followed by;
- "Cjanorie" crossing of Vulpea and Vinoso Rosso
- "Molinara" crossing of Vulpea and Ignoto
- "Brepona" crossing of Vulpea and Dindarella

4) Main grape Sangiovese, followed by;
- "Ciliegolo" crossing of Sangiovese and Moscato Violetto
- "Frappato" crossing of Sangiovese and ?
- "Carricante" crossing of Strino Porcino and Visparola

The Sicilian grapes you surely heard of are; Catarratto, Frappato and Carricante. 🍇

One grape was particulary intetesting. In group two, Piccola Nera. It does not matter how long you ferment it with the skins, the color remains rosé. 👌🍷🍇

To the next cin! 🫶🥂🍷

Last Sunday attended a Sicilian wine tasting focused on Ragusa and Syracuse area, in south Sicily. Very lovely areas to visit by the way. 🥂🍷

Ragusa areas main grapes are Nero D'Avola and Frappato which also produces the only Sicilian DOCG labeled wine "Cerasuolo di Vittoria". The name has origins from a widower who only inherited debts from her late husband, and exchanged land to pay off the loans where the lands were converted to vineyards. They got the DOCG label 2005.

Syracuse areas main grape is Moscato. They got the DOC label 2011.

Nero D'Avola is the king of grapes in Sicily, grows all over the island. Original name is "Calabrese" where first planted in the Avola area, west of Syracuse. You can then have your own theories about real origins, nothing is for sure.

Grillo is also planted widely, it is a crossing of Zibibbo and Catarratto. Main grape of Trapani area which is also the largest wine producing area in Sicily.

We tasted:
1) 🥂 Gurrieri - Hic Est XXII. Brut Metodo Classico.
Grapes: 60% Nero D'Avola, 40% Frappato
Organic 🍃 Only 1,5-2K bottles/ year.
Ragusa area

2) 🥂Giasira - Keration IGT 2023.
Grape: 100% Catarratto lucido
Organic 🍃
Syracuse

3) 🥂 Feudo Maccari - Firraru 2022
Grape: 100% Grillo
Syracuse

4) 🍷Barone Sergio - Luigia 2024. (Rosé wine)
Grape: 100% Nero D'Avola
Syracuse

5) 🍷Arianna Occhipinti - PT Contrada Pettineo 2022
Triple "A" = full respect for nature, people, produce
Grape: 100% Frappato. Done wood.
Ragusa

6)🍷 Akrille - Nero D'Avola DOC 2023
Grape: 100% Nero D'Avola
Ragusa

7)🍷Donnafugata - Floramundi 2022 Cerasuolo di Vittoria 2022 DOCG
Grapes: 70% Nero D'Avola, 30% Frappato
Ragusa

8 )🍷 COS - CDV Classico 2022 DOCG
Grapes: 60% Nero D'Avola, 40% Frappato
Biodynamic 🍃
Ragusa

9)🥂 Salvatore Marino - 1993
Harvest 1993, bottled 2023.
Grape: 100% Moscato di Noto
Syracuse

Event was organized by AIS Catania.

Til' the next sipping! 🍷🥂👌

🍇 Winery Visit 🍇 to Etna north organic winery Palmento Costanzo. A family operation located on the north side of Etna where every wine is connected to Etnas activity. 🌋🍃

When family started they did not know much about wine production, but with time bought more land, knowledge and their daughter has worked and studied at important wineries in France, and it shows.👌🥂🍷

Booked the full wine & food experience where they surprised us with two extra wines, one white and a 2019. The food is all typical local Sicilian produce.

Tasted:
1) 🥂 Etna DOC brut, disgorgement 2023
Grape: 100% Nerello Mascalese

2) 🥂 Bianco di Sei DOC 2022
Grapes: 90% Carricante, 10% Catarratto

3) 🥂 Contrada Santo Spirito DOC 2021
Grape: 100% Carricante

4) 🥂 Contrada Cavagliere DOC 2021
Grape: 100% Carricante

5) 🍷Rosa di Sei DOC 2024

7)🍷Contrada Santo Spirito DOC 2020
Grape: 100% Nerello Mascalese

8 ) 🍷Contrada Santo Spirito DOC 2019
Grape: 100% Nerello Mascalese
A nice surprise added to the tasting.

Winery started its activities 2010 and first harvest was 2011. They also have pre-phylloxera vines and today are an organic winery.

The name "di Sei" ( = of six) relates to six active craters on Etna.

The tasting was wonderful and staff so amazingly friendly. Thank you! 🙏🍇🥂🍷

I brought home the brut (1), Contrada Cavagliere (4) and Contrada Santo Spirito ( 8 ).

To the next cin! 👌🥂🍷

Last friday attended a Masterclass at Tenuta Del Vallone Rosso, more known as TDVR on the labels. A circa four hectars wide Etna wine producer on the south side of the vulcano. 🌋🍷🥂 Location: Biancavilla.
Very interesting tasting as we tasted wines from different levels on Etna, from 750 m.a.s.l to 1100 m.a.s.l.

The south side is often forgotten and yet not much developed, but has huge potential for excellent red wines as the south side is the warmest part of the Etna slopes.

We tasted:
1) Contrade Sparse 2022
🍇 95% Carricante, 5% Catarratto/ Minella

2) Contrada Minicucchita 2024, 750 m.a.s.l
🍇 85% Nerello Mascalese, 10% N. Cappuccio, 5% Alicante

3) Contrada Verginella 2024, 890 m.a.s.l
🍇 95% Nerello Mascalese, 5% N. Cappuccio

4) Vigna Nica 2024, 1100 m.a.s.l
🍇 85% Nerello Mascalese, 15% Carricante

5) TDVR 2023
🍇 85% Nerello Mascalese, 10% N. Cappuccio, 5% Alicante

6) TDVR 2022
🍇 85% Nerello Mascalese, 10% N. Cappuccio, 5% Alicante

A nice evening of wine, food and music. 🙏🌋🍷
Thank you so much for your hospitality!

It is time to dust off this trademark and do something with it.

Wine sales dropped in Italy with 20% year 2024 and this year does not look any cuter. The plan for this project is not 100% clear, will be wines, foods, experiences and then time will tell.

Have 16 years of export in my baggage, plus seven years in tourism where I did incoming, was also local representative for Scandinavian travel companies, created excursions, tailor made experiences and much more. So it is time to put that knowledge in full use.

Meanwhile starting this trip also manifesting for a Nordic earth angel with heart focus as business partner, because when one focus on the project the money comes automatically.

Until then... let's start. "A picca a picca" as Sicilians say...
