Aggiornamento sui piccoli! 🐣

Avete mai osservato una chioccia mentre si prende cura dei suoi pulcini?

Quando trova del cibo, seleziona con attenzione i bocconi migliori, li spezzetta in pezzi più piccoli e richiama i suoi piccoli perché possano mangiare. È uno dei tanti modi in cui le galline si prendono cura dei loro cuccioli, ed è davvero adorabile vedere questi pulcini felici. 🥰

When she finds food, she carefully selects the best pieces, breaks them into smaller bits, and calls her babies over to eat. It's one of the many ways hens look after their young—and it's absolutely adorable to watch those happy little chicks. 🥰

Beh… ieri erano 3 🐣
Oggi sono 5 🥰

La mamma gallina è decisamente molto impegnata. Gli ultimi arrivati sono nati durante la notte e sembrano già tutti felici, al caldo e affamati. Qualche passo coraggioso fuori dal nido… e poi subito di nuovo sotto mamma 😴

Mama hen is very busy. The newest arrivals hatched overnight and everyone seems happy, warm and hungry already. A few brave steps outside the nest, then straight back under mum 😴

Baby news!

Dopo 20 giorni passati a covare le sue uova con pazienza, una delle nostre galline è finalmente diventata mamma 🥰 Oggi sono nati 3 pulcini e sembra che un 4° stia già per uscire dall’uovo. È una mamma orgogliosa, protettiva e non perde di vista i suoi piccoli. Vediamo cosa ci porterà domani 🙂

After 20 days of patiently sitting on her eggs, one of our hens has officially become a mama 🥰 Today, 3 little chicks hatched, and it looks like a 4th is already on the way. She’s proud, protective, and keeping a close eye on her babies. Let’s see what tomorrow brings 🙂

The one on the left was born this morning, the one on the right is 2 hours old! And nr 3? Sleeping under mama 😴

Oggi abbiamo avuto un visitatore davvero speciale nell’orto. Questa tartaruga ha deciso di dare un morsetto alla lattuga. Quindi, se vi capita una lattuga con un pezzetto mancante, adesso sapete chi è stato 😁

In Puglia, avvistare una tartaruga di Hermann è sempre qualcosa di speciale. La tartaruga di Hermann (*Testudo hermanni*) è una specie originaria del sud Italia ed è una delle tartarughe europee più protette. Ama gli habitat mediterranei caldi, ricchi di erbe spontanee, cespugli e angoli soleggiati dove nascondersi — caratteristiche che rendono la campagna pugliese il luogo perfetto per lei.

Questi piccoli e gentili rettili possono vivere per più di 50 anni e trascorrono gran parte della giornata passeggiando lentamente e nutrendosi di piante, fiori e verdure a foglia verde (compresa qualche invitante lattuga 🥬). Nonostante il loro passo lento, svolgono un ruolo importante nell’ecosistema, aiutando a diffondere i semi e a mantenere la vegetazione in salute.

Se ne avvistate una, il consiglio migliore è ammirarla da lontano e lasciarla continuare il suo viaggio in tranquillità. La natura è davvero viva qui a Il Grillo Verde 🌿🐢

We had a very special visitor in the garden today. This tortoise decided to have a nibble on the lettuce. So if you get a lettuce with a bite taken out, you now know who ate it 😁

In Puglia, spotting a Hermann’s tortoise is always something special. The Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni) is native to southern Italy and is one of Europe’s most protected tortoise species. They love warm Mediterranean habitats with wild grasses, herbs, and sunny hiding spots — which makes the Puglian countryside perfect for them.

These gentle little reptiles can live for more than 50 years and spend much of their day slowly wandering, grazing on plants, flowers, and leafy greens (including the occasional tempting lettuce 🥬). Despite their slow pace, they play an important role in the ecosystem by helping spread seeds and maintain healthy vegetation.

If you ever spot one, it’s best to admire it from a distance and let it continue on its journey peacefully. Nature is very much alive here at Il Grillo Verde 🌿🐢

🥚 Abbiamo uova!

Il nostro pollaio si sta finalmente sistemando bene 🙂 Abbiamo aggiunto alcune nuove galline di recente e 6 di loro hanno già iniziato a fare le uova. Anche il gruppo di 15 galline che avevamo preso in precedenza è ormai cresciuto e ha iniziato a produrre, quindi finalmente abbiamo una disponibilità più costante di uova fresche.

Al momento abbiamo ancora circa 50 uova disponibili e saremo a casa per tutto il pomeriggio, quindi scriveteci se vi interessa!

Come sempre: €0,50 per uovo 🐔

🥚 We have eggs!

Our flock is finally settling in nicely 🙂 We recently added a few more chickens, and 6 of them are already laying. The group of 15 hens we bought earlier have now grown up and started producing as well, so we finally have a steady supply of fresh eggs available.

At the moment we still have around 50 eggs available, and we’ll be home all afternoon, so send us a message if you’d like some!

🥚 Uova fresche e sane iniziano da galline felici!

Al Il Grillo Verde Puglia, le nostre galline passano le giornate all’aria aperta, libere di muoversi tra sole, erba fresca e i ritmi tranquilli della campagna ❤️

Il risultato sono uova fresche, dal colore intenso e dal sapore autentico — semplici, naturali e prodotte con cura.

Ecco alcune foto della nostra famiglia felice… e leggermente disfunzionale 🙂🐔

È tempo di aggiornamenti! 🌱

Ora che il tempo è migliorato, finalmente abbiamo potuto dedicarci seriamente all’orto. Tutte le patate sono state piantate e stanno già spuntando bene. Anche il mais dolce è stato seminato e, visto che siamo un po’ in ritardo rispetto all’anno scorso, incrociamo le dita che il grande caldo arrivi solo a luglio. 😉

Stiamo preparando le aiuole per pomodori, zucchine, melanzane e cetrioli. Nel frattempo, per sfruttare al meglio lo spazio, abbiamo piantato della lattuga tra una coltura e l’altra.

Le spirali per la semina hanno funzionato molto bene, ma la qualità del terreno fa davvero la differenza. Un sacco di terra che abbiamo usato era di qualità inferiore e le piantine stanno facendo più fatica — una lezione da ricordare per il prossimo anno!

Infine, un aggiornamento sulle galline giovani: hanno deposto le loro prime uova! 🐣 Presto quindi avremo ancora più uova disponibili.

Time for an update! 🌱

Now that the weather has improved, we’ve finally had the chance to really get to work in the vegetable garden. All the potatoes are planted and already coming up nicely. The sweet corn is sown as well, and since we’re a bit later than last year, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the real heat won’t arrive until July. 😉

We’re now preparing the beds for tomatoes, courgettes, eggplants, and cucumbers. While we wait for those plants to grow, we’ve planted lettuce in between to make good use of the space.

The seed snails have worked very well, but good soil really makes all the difference. One bag we used was of lower quality, and those seedlings are clearly struggling — something to keep in mind for next year!

And finally, an update on the young chickens: they’ve laid their first eggs! 🐣 So very soon we’ll have even more eggs available.
