THE ITALIAN LEGACY

The name “Prosecco” comes from the small village of Prosecco, now a district of Trieste in Friuli‑Venezia Giulia, which gave its name to the famous wine. The village is documented since the Middle Ages with various spellings, such as Prossecho or Prosec, and this designation was eventually applied to the wine produced in the area, becoming the identifier for both the grape and the product itself.

The origins of modern Prosecco date back to the 16th century, when it was referred to as “castellum nobile vinum Pucinum”, meaning the noble wine linked to the castle of the village of Prosecco. This name recalls “Pucinum”, mentioned by Pliny the Elder, a wine made from local grapes that was already appreciated in Roman times.

One of the earliest references to a name similar to today’s “Prosecco” appears in the writings of the English traveler Fynes Moryson in 1593. The traditional grape, Glera, cultivated in Friuli‑Venezia Giulia and Veneto, reinforces the historical continuity between ancient Pucinum and modern Prosecco.

In summary, Prosecco is not only a world-renowned quality wine, but also a testament to Italy’s rich winemaking history and tradition.
