We are thrilled to the welcome to the portfolio 6th generation sisters Justine & Marie Charlemagne of Champagne Guy Charlemagne, whom we met via their cousin Rodolphe Peters.
Since 1892, the family has farmed vineyards in the famed Côte des Blancs Grand Cru of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The family’s 12 hectares include many old vines (avg 58 years of age) and all are massale selection in the celebrated lieux-dits of Les Chétillons, Les Coullemets, Les Hauts Jardins, Les Mussettes, Mont-Joly, and Aillerand du Midi.
Most cuvées are vinified in stainless steel as the sisters feel it preserves energy and freshness, and it allows them “to respect the verticality of Le Mesnil.” Oak is used sparingly and is incorporated for texture and oxygenation rather than for flavor or aroma. If the work is done in the vineyard, as they believe it must be, then there is very little do be done in the cellar. Some cuvées spend years aging sur lattes, reinforcing their feeling that patience rewards with structure and complexity. The resulting wines are vibrant, ethereal, and lifted expressions of these celebrated terroirs. We can’t wait to share them with our customers and fellow Champagne lovers.
