❄️ Snow in winter: a valuable support even in low-snowfall areas
In Chianti where snowfall is nowadays sporadic and lasts only a few days, snow still plays a meaningful agronomic role, especially when it occurs during the coldest periods of winter.
Even short snow events, when combined with low temperatures, help reduce the survival of overwintering insects, larvae, and fungal spores present in the soil and plant residues. This selective natural effect does not eliminate pests and diseases entirely, but it helps lower their initial pressure, promoting a better biological balance in the vineyard and reducing the risk of early-season outbreaks.
Although it does not persist throughout the winter, a brief snow cover provides short-term protection against extreme cold peaks, limiting sudden temperature fluctuations in the soil and safeguarding the root system during the most critical nights.
As it melts, snow releases water gradually and efficiently, supplying the soil with readily available moisture.
Even a short-lived snow cover helps protect the soil surface from compaction and erosion caused by heavy rainfall, maintaining good physical soil conditions ahead of spring growth.
In areas where snow is not a constant presence, each snowfall event remains a valuable natural input, supporting vineyard health and helping prepare the vines for a balanced vegetative restart. And then, is magnificent! ☃️
