Fabrizio, Carolyn and their family welcome old friends and new to taste local wines, typical Tuscan dishes, and the best coffee in town.

Friendly service on their non smoking sunny terrace. Bar Dante is connected to a prestigious wine store, Enoteca Toscana. Wines can be purchased here and consumed on this beautiful terrace. Typical local food is available all day to accompany wines, also available by the glass.

February 1st . So this is our last post from Fabrizio and me at Bar Dante. It has been one hell of a ride and we thank you all for joining us. This is the last thought from that sums up our future dreams: “We look forward to a more relaxing future, and time to enjoy our family, discover new places, and revisit old ones. Personally, I have always preferred our leisurely walks to the road trips. My husband insists on driving but also likes to observe the scenery, continually pointing to vegetation, villages, vineyards and views in the distance, assuring me that he is also completely focused on the road ahead. The car is bad enough, but I firmly refuse to sit on the back of his motorbike as he negotiates the hairpin bends. (Did I mention the ankle injury I suffered on our very first adventure?)”. Meno 1. The last day of our adventure. From February 1st 2025 Virginia and Claudio take on the Bar Dante management and we are confident they will make a great success of it. The local couple are young, bright and brilliant and we wish them all the best. If anyone wants to look for us, we will be just around the corner, taking it a little easier, selling the odd bottle of wine, chatting with random tourists, slicing some ham, cutting tomatoes….and, if we are not there then we will be somewhere in the world enjoying life with our family. All the best to all who have followed and supported us over the past 41 years….we will surely find each other soon.

As we serve our roast chicken for the final time today we remember some more smiley happy people from the past and present. Family, extended family and friends, too many to mention personally. Just one random film star thrown in for fun. Happiness really is a warm smile on a sunny terrace. We thank you all

Meno 3, the final memories that lead us to the future….
These were our first attempts to expand the wine business back in 1991 while I was pregnant with Francesca.
Enoteca Toscana slowly evolved until we were finally able to open a separate outlet in 1998. Those that have read Life Behind the Bar will know the logistical and financial obstacles thrown at us and how we juggled the two businesses. “I sometimes dive into Enoteca Toscana just to escape the intense summer heat. The air conditioned store is my retreat from the stresses of Bar Dante’s bustling lunchtime trade and it is a delightful relief to cool off and chill out in this sublime, calming interior. As I peruse my second territory, I understand why so many tourists want to enter this space just to wander around and take photos. The feel-good ambiance incapsulates the essence of Tuscany and I am proud of our achievement.” So our second territory will soon become our primary one. We look forward to seeing old friends and welcoming new ones

Minus 4. These two…Francesca and Elisabetta…
“Most of our family have worked with us at some point, and they include several nieces and nephews as well as our children. They have all served their apprenticeship at Bar Dante, and at young ages their first task was to clear tables and swat flies on the terrace (five cents for every fly). The younger they were, the more smiles and tips they were given. As a mother and boss I was always harder on my own children, which sometimes felt unfair. Both girls ended up in tears on several occasions.” Our talented, funny, singing, dancing artistic daughters have always entertained and endeared themselves to guests over the years. Few have been lucky enough to witness their exceptional double act behind the counter and I have never been able to capture it on camera. Thank you for all the joy and laughter ❤️❤️

The final countdown. “Radda evolved and Bar Dante adapted, but some things have remained the same. I have great affection for these regulars, their reassuring presence reminding me of that wonderfully carefree summer and the original vibe that first enchanted me.” Salutiamo tutti i nostri clienti affezionati. Day 13. The final countdown.

When Susan and Bill first rediscovered their ancestral roots, Emily and Eliza, their young daughters, also fell in love with all things Italian. Thanks to their love of Tuscan ham, mozzarella and tomatoes, our first “piatto Boss” was originally created. Here, Eliza was given a private lesson in the art of making cappuccino

Day 12, one more week to go. It is impossible to show all our treasured guests but we will try and show as many as we can. This is Mike and Jane, outside Bar Dante with Karola and me in 2015. The first of several visits, Radda quickly became an annual must for this couple. I can recall Jane jokingly trying to chain herself to our railings when it was time to leave.
A shout out to Karola too who celebrates her birthday today. All the best to you and your future happiness. Your service to Bar Dante will always be appreciated. Can you spot the silly photo bomber in the background?

What’s the story with the cars?
Day 11, counting down.
“The white canvas roof, leather seats and chrome doors of his exclusive Calessino created a unique wedding carriage, and many romantic couples engaged him as a chauffeur for their special day. Happy to lend his services, Fab would decorate the cart with bows, flags and ribbons, guaranteeing a spectacular entrance, attracting attention wherever he went. The “Toytown” buggy also captured the imagination of young children, queuing up for a ride at Bar Dante. Leaving parents to finish their lunch in peace, he treated the little ones to a leisurely spin around Radda, waving to spectators like royalty as they tootled past. It wasn’t quite Disneyland, but the kids loved it.
His bright yellow BMW Z1, exposing his boyish energy and need for speed, drew a more macho crowd. Justifying his original purchase, this rare model was the only one of its kind and colour in Italy, he told me, but I would never share his passion for this ostentatious sports car. My staff and I could always hear the fancy two seater arrive, loud engine and thumping music announcing his arrival from the bottom of the hill. Enthusiasts of a certain age will take photos and drool over the electronic vertical doors, as my husband extricates himself out of his impossibly low seat, proud to show off this exclusive piece of German technology.
Ultimately, both are just playtime toys though. Like his father before him, it is a humble Fiat Panda that gets Fabrizio to work on time. This unassuming, practical but reliable Italian icon is probably a closer representation of his true character.”

On this grey January day, day 10, of the final Bar Dante countdown, let’s remember some sunnier times. Radda loves a good wedding and weddings love Radda. Some fabulous young couples celebrated their special day here together with family and friends and we will always treasure these moments
