Loving the lake life. Lake Garda is absolutely magical.
Friends, you all know how much I love the wines of Lugana. I have written about them over the years and feel like it is a region that is under the radar for many Americans. I recently had the most memorable trip to Lake Garda exploring the wines of Lugana and fell in love with their wines all over again.
Lugana wines are white wines from the Lugana DOC wine region in Italy, which is located on the southern side of Lake Garda. The region’s unique terroir, which includes clay and limestone soils and the moderating influence of the lake, creates ideal conditions for producing high-quality wines.
The wines blew me away. I was asked to describe the wines of Lugana in one word - and I said ELEGANT. The wines are elegant, textured, fresh, structured, complex, age worthy and have a ton of personality…. Lugana wines are delicate on the nose, but rich in minerality on the palate with exceptional ageing potential. The wines are made from Turbiana, a unique native grape grown on the southern shores of Lake Garda. Some of my favorites wines were the sparkling and riservas. Who don’t love a great bottle of bubbly. 🍾🥂
There is something so special about drinking wines on the soils from where the grapes are grown, so be sure to explore this region and visit Lake Garda. Lake Garda is a special destination for many reasons, including its natural beauty, history, culture, and outdoor activities. The snow capped mountains in the north and the rolling hills of the south are breathtaking. And of course the food and wine are exquisite.
