Ampeleia è un’azienda vitivinicola dell’Alta Maremma Toscana sita a Roccatederighi, un borgo medievale in provincia di Grosseto. È gestita da un gruppo di giovani professionisti guidati da Marco Tait, vignaiolo e responsabile aziendale, che a soli 22 anni ne ha preso le redini. Ampeleia is a winery in the Upper Maremma region of Tuscany, located in Roccatederighi, a medieval town in the province of Grosseto. It is managed by a group of young professionals guided by vigneron and company manager Marco Tait, who took the reins when he was just 22. In almost twenty years of activity, we have converted our production first into organic and then into biodynamic. The character of Ampeleia has its roots in Cabernet Franc, the grape variety that best expresses the identity of the terroirs, while at the same time telling its story.

15 vendemmie fa è iniziata così la storia di Unlitro.

L'idea era semplice: recuperare un formato popolare e conviviale e reinterpretarlo con lo stile di Ampeleia. Con leggerezza, senza rinunciare alla personalità. Con gentilezza.

Perché gentile è il formato, ma gentile è anche il vino.

Da allora Unlitro continua a fare quello che ha sempre fatto: passare di mano in mano, sedersi a tavola con le persone e diventare parte dei loro momenti insieme.

Unlitro parta da qui, dalla vigna e dalla cantina, e lungo il suo percorso incontra tante persone. Chi lo sceglie per il proprio locale, chi lo porta a cena, chi lo stappa per condividere un brindisi con gli amici. Ogni persona lascia un segno.

Cosa c'è dentro una bottiglia di Unlitro?

Tanto per cominciare ci sono le uve: Alicante Nero, Sangiovese, Mourvèdre, Alicante Bouschet.

Ma c'è anche una visione. C’è l’idea di una bottiglia che mette insieme. Che si fa circondare da risate, brindisi, chiacchiere e continui rinvii al momento di salutarsi.

E, poi, in quella bottiglia ci sono le persone. Quelle che lavorano le vigne. Quelle che seguono il vino mentre cambia forma, mentre viaggia, mentre arriva sulle tavole. Quelle che lo ricevono, lo aprono, lo condividono.

Tutto questo dentro la stessa bottiglia.

What’s inside a bottle of Unlitro?

To start with, there are the grapes: Alicante Nero, Sangiovese, Mourvèdre and Alicante Bouschet.

But there is also an idea. The idea of a bottle that brings people together. One that naturally finds itself surrounded by laughter, toasts, conversations and those endless moments when nobody seems quite ready to say goodbye.

Il 19 maggio abbiamo fatto un viaggio tra Cabernet Franc. Siamo rimasti molto vicini alle vigne, e allo stesso tempo andati lontani.

Prima ci ha guidati Marco, il nostro vignaiolo, in una passeggiata tra i filari. Poi Filippo Bartolotta ci ha portati altrove, grazie ai profumi nei calici e a un po’ di immaginazione, tra Loira e Toscana.

È nato così un confronto vivo, fatto di assaggi, domande, ascolto e punti di vista diversi. Una degustazione un po’ fuori dall’ordinario, che ci è piaciuta proprio per questo. E che vogliamo ripetere ancora.

On May 19th, we set off on a journey through Cabernet Franc. We stayed close to the vineyards, while travelling quite far at the same time.

First, Marco, our vineyard manager, guided us through the rows of vines. Then Filippo Bartolotta took us somewhere else entirely, through the aromas in the glass and a little imagination, moving between the Loire Valley and Tuscany.

What followed was a lively exchange of ideas, questions, tastings and perspectives. A tasting experience that felt a little out of the ordinary, and all the more interesting because of it.

One we are already looking forward to repeating.

Per molto tempo il Cabernet Franc è rimasto un po’ nell’ombra del suo “discendente” più famoso, il Cabernet Sauvignon. Eppure è arrivato prima lui. Solo negli anni '90 gli studi sul DNA della vite hanno confermato che il Cabernet Sauvignon nasce dall’incrocio tra Franc e Sauvignon Blanc.

Ci piace pensare che il Franc abbia preso bene la notizia. Del resto, ha sempre avuto abbastanza personalità da non aver bisogno di stare sotto i riflettori.

È un’uva che cambia molto da luogo a luogo. In Ampeleia, sulle Colline Metallifere, non esiste un solo Cabernet Franc: nel raggio di pochi metri cambiano le altitudini, le esposizioni, minerali nel terreno... e il vino cambia con loro.

Da 8 ettari di Cabernet Franc produciamo 4 etichette in purezza. Non per cercare differenze a tutti i costi, ma perché sono già lì. Il nostro lavoro è riconoscerle, accompagnarle dalla vigna alla cantina e lasciare che trovino la loro forma.

For a long time, Cabernet Franc lived a little in the shadow of its more famous “offspring”, Cabernet Sauvignon. And yet, it came first. It was only in the 1990s, thanks to DNA research, that Cabernet Sauvignon was confirmed to be the result of a cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc.

We like to think Franc took the news quite well. After all, it has always had enough personality not to need the spotlight.

It’s a grape that changes dramatically from place to place. Here at Ampeleia, in the Metalliferous Hills, there is no single Cabernet Franc. Within a few metres, altitude shifts, exposure changes, minerals in the soil vary... and the wine changes with them.

From 8 hectares of Cabernet Franc, we produce 4 single-varietal wines. Not because we are looking for differences at all costs, but because they are already there.

Our job is to recognise them, guide them from vineyard to cellar, and let them find their own voice.
