Behind the peaceful vineyards of Aiola lies a forgotten story of medieval Tuscany.

Thanks to the work of Polisportiva club of Vagliagli, the collaboration with the archives of Siena and Florence, and the historical research of Vito De Meo, new details about the past of Aiola continue to emerge from ancient documents and chronicles.
The earliest confirmed mention of Aiola dates back to 1370, when the estate belonged to the powerful family. Yet even older records from 1318 may already refer to a fortified noble residence here, making Aiola one of the oldest documented estates in this part of Chianti Classico.
Centuries ago, these hills were not only a land of vineyards and olive groves, but also a dangerous frontier between Siena and Florence.
In 1554, during the final war that led to the fall of the Republic of Siena, Aiola became a strategic fortress on the border.
One of the most moving stories concerns the famous military architect known as “San Marino,” mortally wounded during the siege. According to historical letters preserved in the archives, his final words spoke of loyalty, honor, and devotion to his land.

Today Aiola is once again a place of peace, wine, beauty, and hospitality — but every stone of the castle still carries the memory of these extraordinary events.

Today is a special day for Fattoria della Aiola: we begin the harvest precisely on the feast of Saint Michael. This tradition goes back to the 15th century — to the famous “Atto della vendemmia” of 1444, issued by the Lega del Chianti in the commune of Radda, where some of our vineyards still lie today.

Already back then it was established that grapes could not be harvested before Saint Michael’s Day, in order to create “that good wine that sells so well” — the very wine capable of bringing joy to both palate and heart. We are proud that, centuries later, this story still lives on in every cluster and every drop of wine born from our corner of Tuscany.
