The grove at the farm in the first days of the first heatwave of the year. We're busy harvesting the camomile and working with our new distillation machine for the first time, but the heat means we've shifted to our summer work schedule; starting earlier, escape the sun in the afternoon, and a long shift from late afternoon into evening.

We're planting in the vegetable garden at home, seeding in the nursery, and have moved the plants out of the hot greenhouses into the shade. There's much to do, and we have to be more efficient with our time, especially with all the online techie stuff we're working on.

An extremely busy week, but just enough time for an an afternoon cutting soap for an order we have to send of to Germany. All our olive oil soaps are custom made for each client, so it takes up to a month for them to dry naturally before we can cut and wrap them and send them off.

We've also begun harvesting the camomile flowers at the farm, and completed our first tests with our new distillation machine there to make essential oils, oliolites, and hydrolytes. This is all part of a new project we're working on, so there's that, as well as everything else. Spring is a very busy time.

The rows of camomile growing happily in the grove at the farm, along with a few rogue poppies 😀. We have to hurry now, and hope the weather holds, because they're ready to pick. The drying room has to be set up too, and the distillation equipment prepared.

We've been busy with soap, and ads for the tapenades, and there's ongoing work in the grove at home, the nursery, and the vegetable gardens, reinstalling the watering system before the summer heat. We're also putting the third grove back into production this year, too, so it's a very busy time.

Repotting and reseeding the trays outside the little nursery in the sun beside the house. We have ten types of corn, silverbeet, tomatoes, and sweet potato which will be replanted in the vegetable garden at home, and a range of officinal plants including sage, beebalm, hyssop, oregano, and summer savory which will end up at the farm.

We're talking to a few restaurants in Rome who are interested in our products, so we have to schedule a couple of trips down there in the coming weeks, and the long bed of camomile in the grove at the farm is almost ready to be harvested, so we have to finish setting up the drying room for that too. There's a lot to do 🫣

The canopy of wisteria in full bloom on the patio at home. These are warm Spring days, but with rain forecast this week, which is even better! The olive trees are thriving, but we've given them a high nutrient snack and turned the earth at the base of every trunk. When they're happy, we are 🥰

We're hard at work making soap for two orders, and have another delivery to a restaurant in Rome this week that uses only our oil for their customers 😎, one of whom loved it so much he returned home to Canada and ordered more! Turns out you can spend money on ads, but nothing beats tasting it. Who knew? 😂

The first flower buds on the olive trees at the end of April on a beautiful Spring afternoon. By the end of May these will bloom in clusters of beautiful little white flowers, then shed their petals in the summer heat as the fruit grows and the pit forms.

In Autumn the olives mature and ripen. Harvest depends on a number of factors, but we generally work slightly later than others, because we prefer the smoother and richer taste of our oil then. It has a richer bouquet of flavours; fresh but smooth, moderately fruity, slightly pungent, and with the hint of grass notes.

We've been busy in the vegetable garden at home, mulching the large section of cover crop that we'd planted in early December then covering it with our thick black plastic for a few weeks before we transplant the seedlings that are growing in the nursery.

The crop was a rich mix called biomultidora made by of spelta, pea, common vetch, black oat, clover, horse radish, rocket, phacelia, and white mustard. It's rich in carbon and nitrogen, and the radish and mustard fumigate the soil. This fabulous stuff regenerates and enriches the soil’s rich natural ecosystem of microbes and bacteria. The vegetables will love it 😍

Soap making day in the lab! We had an order come in this week for our Castile organic soap, which we custom make for each order using only ingredients from our farm and local organic producers. The soaps cure and dry in natural air for a month, so our customers have to wait, but it's worth it! 😀

Castile soaps are based on ancient traditional recipes from the Levant, named after the region is Spain that made and exported them in quantity during the middle ages. Most modern recipes are approximations full of chemicals and very little olive oil, but we use traditional production techniques and recipes, with pure Olevo biological olive oil and nothing else.

This fabulous man is our friend Luca Pettinari . He's the guy you call when you need a certified specialist to prune your trees. It was Luca who completely reshaped our grove a year ago, and he's back, to inspect and trim and prune again. Every branch that hits the ground makes us gasp, but the man's a pro 😎

Polyconic vase pruning directs the branches outwards and upwards, pulling the lymph of tree from the trunk up into three or four main branches. This opens the middle of the tree to sunlight and air, and makes them healthier and more vital. The results have been extraordinary, and we can't wait for this year's harvest!

The weather's been terrible, and there's much to clean up at the farm after fierce wind storms, but it's finally sunny and warm and our olive tree specialist is here in the home grove, inspecting his work and spending an afternoon shaping and directing the branches further upwards and outwards.

With the good weather, we've got work to do in the vegetable garden at home, and grass to cut in the grove, and our rows of officinal plants to attend to. There's also an ad campaign to run, repairs to plan, a website to rebuild, and kids home for Easter to spend time with 😍
