Young olives growing happily in the afternoon sunshine in the grove at home in the third week of August. We've had a truly biblical storm so the earth is well nourished, and there looks to be a large and bountiful harvest on the way this year. There's lots of olives and the trees look great!

We're still a couple of months away from harvest, though. The olives mature and ripen throughout Autumn, but they tell us when they're ready. We usually pick later, waiting as long as possible, because it gives our Olevo oil its distinctively smooth and rich flavor. There's much to do until then, too, and hot weather still to navigate.

De-w**ding on the edge of the regenerative vegetable garden at home on a fiercely hot morning. We had storms for hours, lots of rain, and an extraordinary partial eclipse through black clouds and lightning, but even though the next days are forecast to be cooler there's no sign of it at all.

We've been working on plans for new olive oil labels, with new rules and requirements published by the Italian government to study and comply with. There's rosemary to pick and distil at the farm, plus dried camomile in the drying room waiting for us to cold infuse in oil. A lot of interesting projects 😀

The back of the house at sunset in the primary grove at home, at the end of another stifling hot day. The grass is burnt brown in the heat and there's very little we can do outside from late morning till early evening. The vegetable gardens need a few day's attention after a short trip away, but that's it.

There's been no rain in more than two months except for two very brief showers, but the gardens are watered on a drip irrigation system from the fresh rainwater tanks for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. The thick layer of hay and compost does the rest. The olive trees, however, are quite happy! 😀

Washing trays from the nursery at home before repotting seedlings into larger pots. We have lavender, sage, Clary sage, and Marjory. It's so hot we'll keep them under the shaded patio for a while, monitor carefully, water regularly, and move them in and out of the sunlight until they're strong and healthy enough to be planted in the garden.

The heatwave is relentless. The vegetable garden needs monitoring and extra watering, but it's growing well, and has gifted us eggplants, zucchini, silverbeet, potatoes, melons, and cucumbers recently. The tomatoes are on the way, but there's something going on with the watermelons this year... 🍉🙄

The grove at home during the extraordinary heatwave. It hasn't rained for weeks, since the last brief storm at the beginning of July. Much of Europe is struggling, and suffering, and as farmers there's not much we can do except modify our work schedule and daily timetable, work fast, and stay hydrated 🥵.

The regenerative gardens are thriving; the soil is rich with nutrients, and the thick composts and hay we use seal much of the moisture in, supplemented only by brief timed watering from our rainwater tanks in the morning and evening. The olive groves are healthy and happy. They love this.

This fabulous plant has a fabulous name; it's a Woolly Mullein. More than two meters tall, it has a large rossette of thick leaves around the lower part, and a long tall stem of little yellow flowers above. We didn't plant it, it's a w**d common in dry waste areas, roadsides, and fields, but it's a remarkable plant.

The Mullein has unique, distinctive medicinal properties. The flowers can be used to make tea or honey to treat throat infections, colds, coughs, and respiratory problems, and an olive oil infusion using the flowers and leaves creates an ointment to treat burns and rashes. So you know what we're going to do, don't you? 😀

Today's bounty from the regenerative garden at home. There's lots of large courgettes, which kept growing because we couldn't find the time to pick them. Still delicious 😋. Also eggplants, crispy Romana salad, silverbeet, summer spinach, and wonderful green Italian Caroselli, which look like and are melons, but taste a bit like cucumbers 😀.

We've sailed through a scheduled inspection of our lab, workspaces, and workflow at the farm by the ASL, who monitor and approve health and safety procedures in food trasformation environments, and shown what we're working on to our friend Dario Cortese of .soil.dario, who is always so knowledgeable and helpful.

The vegetable gardens above the grove at home, on a stifling hot afternoon in July. They're doing well, regardless, gifting us the first summer vegetables including various sorts of salads and beets, courgettes, potatoes, and eggplants. The tomato plants are winding their way up the bamboo poles, and various other goodies on the way as well.

The thick layer of mulch and hay is protecting the earth from the heat, sealing in the moisture and the soil’s rich natural ecosystem of microbes and bacteria. We use only organic composts without any pesticides or fertilizers, and water only briefly in the morning and evening from our natural rainwater drip irrigation system.

This is what a heatwave does to your lush long grass in an olive grove seeded with herbs and flowers 🙄. The grass is bleached yellow, the flowers burned and shriveled in the heat. But no matter how hard it is to work in these conditions, it's the circle of life, and the olive trees love it.

We've had a few heavy storms, so the earth is hydrated. The regenerative gardens have sailed through their difficult period and are blessing us with their first summer vegetables, and we picked all the cornflower and camomile we needed and wanted at the farm for our hydrolyte tests. All good!

There's not much you can do in a heatwave like this. Extraordinary. It changes the nature of our days, what we can do, and when we can do it. It's also put considerable strain on the young plants that we've recently planted in the vegetable garden. This heat, this early, means they're not mature or strong enough, so they need extra watering and care.

We've finished picking and distilling the last of the cornflower at the farm. It's too hot for any more to flower, but that gives us the opportunity to turn to the lavender. The olive trees are thriving in the heat and the first fruits are forming, and there's been a couple of short storms to keep the ground hydrated.
