Healing the body and mind; thriving not just surviving. Sometimes horses just need more time to heal….. a thought provoking read.

If your horse is broken, let them rest and recover.

It sounds obvious, but sometimes it really isn’t.

Healing takes time. Sometimes months, sometimes years. Just because we can make a horse more comfortable, support a structure, put on a boot, fit a shoe, use medication or provide some other form of support, it doesn’t mean the underlying problem has magically disappeared.

When people contact me and the first questions are:

“Can I still ride them while they’re going through rehab?”

“I need the horse back by next season.”

“Can you get them right enough for me to compete?”

Or:

“I’ll just get the farrier to put some shoes on so I can carry on competing.”

These are the cases I turn away.

Not because we don’t want to help, but because we are not miracle workers.

Sometimes the most important part of a rehabilitation programme is time.

Time for tissues to heal.
Time for the body to adapt.
Time for the horse to rebuild strength.
Time for the horse to learn to move comfortably again.

And sometimes, despite everything we can do, a horse has been damaged so severely that returning to the job they were previously doing simply isn’t feasible or fair on that horse.

There are only so many plasters and crutches you can put on a problem before you have to step back and ask the most important question:

“What does this horse actually need from us?”

Not what we want them to do.
Not what we need them to be ready for.
Not what fits around competition dates.

What does the horse need?

Rehabilitation isn’t about finding the quickest way to get a horse back into work.

It is about giving them the best possible chance of becoming comfortable, strong and functional again, and sometimes that means accepting that their future may look very different from their past.

If your horse is broken, let them be broken for a while.

Give them the time they need.

Because sometimes the kindest thing you can do for a horse isn’t finding another way to keep them working.

It’s giving them permission to stop.

This is exactly what I’ve been thinking for sometime, but couldn’t put so succinctly into words. It’s the holistic picture that counts. Rehab is a journey to a destination of meeting the horse in a coping place (be it back performing, happy hacking, lead walks or full retirement) and the hoof is the window.

The Whole Horse Protocol: Why you can’t treat just one part of the horse.
Anyone who has spent years around horses has heard the saying: "No Foot, No Horse.” It's true. But it isn't the whole truth. A better saying might be: "No Balance, No Horse."
Balance doesn't simply refer to the horse standing square. It encompasses every aspect of the horse's health and management. The feet. The teeth. The muscles. The skeleton. The digestive system. Nutrition. Saddle fit. The rider. Pain. Movement.
Even seemingly unrelated factors such as stress, gastric discomfort or poorly fitting tack can alter the way a horse carries itself. When posture changes, weight distribution changes. When weight distribution changes, so do the forces acting on the limbs and feet. In turn, altered hoof function feeds back into the rest of the body, creating a continuous cycle of compensation.
This is why successful rehabilitation requires looking at the whole horse rather than treating individual symptoms in isolation.
One of the greatest challenges is that horses cannot tell us where the problem began. Without a complete history, we are often faced with the classic "chicken and egg" dilemma. Did the horse develop long toes because it was protecting a painful back? Or did years of poor hoof balance gradually lead to compensatory changes higher up the body? Did dental imbalance alter posture, eventually affecting the feet, or did chronic foot pain change the way the horse carried its head and jaw?
In many cases, the answer is that we simply don't know.
What we do know is that, once compensation begins, every part of the horse influences every other part. Like a line of dominoes, one imbalance leads to another until the horse eventually runs out of ways to compensate.
The aim of the Whole Horse Protocol is therefore not to search for a single cause, but to identify every factor affecting the horse's comfort and function, and address them together. Only then can the body begin to restore healthy movement, healthy posture and, ultimately, healthier feet.
Start at the feet.
The hoof is the horse's foundation.
If the toes become too long, the heels collapse or migrate forwards, or the frog stops functioning correctly, the horse changes how it stands. Instead of standing with the limbs directly beneath the body, it begins loading areas that are less painful. The body adapts. Shoulders tighten. The neck changes. The pelvis rotates. Muscles develop unevenly. Joints experience forces they were never designed to carry. The horse isn't being awkward. It's solving a problem.
Then look in the mouth.
Many people struggle to see how teeth could possibly affect feet.
Imagine trying to walk all day while holding your head permanently tilted to one side. Soon your neck hurts. Then your shoulders. Then your back. Eventually your hips ache. The horse is no different. If the molars develop uneven wear, hooks, ramps or wave mouth, chewing becomes asymmetrical. That asymmetry affects the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). Those joints influence the muscles of the poll, neck and shoulders. The horse changes posture to stay comfortable. Once posture changes, weight distribution changes. Weight distribution affects the feet. It's a continuous loop.
Then consider the back.
When one area hurts, another area works harder.
An elderly horse with significant spinal changes often shifts weight forwards or backwards depending upon which posture is least uncomfortable. This changes hoof loading. The hooves respond by growing according to the forces placed upon them. Over months and years, the hoof capsule literally remodels itself around those abnormal forces. The hoof shape you see today is often the result of years of compensation—not the original cause.
Internal health matters too.
The musculoskeletal system doesn't work in isolation.
Pain affects movement. Movement affects circulation. Circulation affects hoof growth. Nutrition affects horn quality. Dental disease affects digestion. Poor digestion affects nutrient availability. Reduced movement affects muscle mass. Everything influences everything else.
Why rehabilitation takes time.
Owners naturally want immediate improvement.
Unfortunately biology doesn't work to human timetables. Hoof horn grows slowly. Tendons adapt slowly. Muscles rebuild slowly. Ligaments remodel slowly. The nervous system has to relearn normal movement patterns. What developed over many years cannot realistically be reversed in a few weeks. Every trim, every dental examination, every physiotherapy session and every management change is simply another step towards giving the horse the best chance of comfort.
The goal changes with age.
Young horses may return to athletic work. Older horses may return to hacking. Very elderly horses may simply become more comfortable while enjoying retirement. That is still success.
The purpose of rehabilitation is not always to restore performance. Sometimes it is simply to improve quality of life. A comfortable retired horse is a successful outcome.
The bottom line.
The feet matter.
The teeth matter.
The back matters.
Nutrition matters.
Movement matters.
Each influences the others.
Looking at only one body part is rather like trying to repair one wheel on a car with a bent chassis.
Until the whole horse is assessed, lasting improvement is unlikely.
Going barefoot doesn't cause lameness, it reveals it.
One of the most common statements heard after a horse's shoes are removed is: "The horse was fine until the shoes came off.” It's an understandable conclusion. But it isn't always the correct one.
Shoes don’t cure poor feet.
Shoes were originally developed to protect horses working on surfaces and for workloads beyond what the natural hoof could comfortably tolerate. They are a management tool, not a treatment for poor hoof health.
A healthy hoof, receiving appropriate nutrition, movement and regular maintenance, is remarkably resilient. It grows in response to the work it performs, and under natural conditions, growth and wear exist in dynamic balance.
When a horse develops long toes, collapsed or forward-running heels, weak frogs, thin soles or poor digital cushion development, the problem is not that the hoof lacks metal. The problem is that the hoof is no longer functioning as nature intended.
Attaching a shoe does not restore a healthy digital cushion, strengthen internal structures or correct abnormal biomechanics. It may alter how forces are distributed and can sometimes make the horse appear more comfortable, but appearance and soundness are not always the same thing. If the underlying cause remains, the pathology remains.
Modern hoof rehabilitation offers alternatives. Hoof boots, therapeutic pads and individually selected support materials allow the horse to remain comfortable while encouraging the hoof to function, strengthen and remodel as healthier growth replaces distorted horn.
Rehabilitation isn’t instant.
When shoes are removed, the hoof suddenly has to perform jobs it may not have done for years.
The frog begins engaging. The digital cushion begins working. The sole begins adapting. The hoof wall begins growing according to new forces. During this transition, some horses become temporarily foot-sensitive. That sensitivity is information. It tells us where the horse needs support.
Comfort can still be maintained.
Going barefoot does not mean forcing a horse to walk over painful surfaces.
Modern rehabilitation frequently uses:
hoof boots
pads
appropriate trimming
carefully managed exercise
suitable footing
nutritional support
veterinary involvement where necessary
The aim is always comfort. Pain should never be considered part of rehabilitation.
The horse chooses its own posture.
A horse with long toes and collapsed heels often stands camped forward. To the casual observer this can appear to be laziness. In reality the horse is redistributing weight to minimise discomfort. The abnormal posture changes how every joint above the foot functions. Unless those forces are addressed, simply replacing shoes cannot resolve the underlying biomechanics.
There is no quick fix.
Owners naturally hope for rapid improvement, particularly when a horse has become uncomfortable.
Unfortunately, living tissue cannot be rushed. A complete new hoof capsule generally takes between five and nine months to grow, depending upon the individual horse, its age, nutrition, circulation and the season. In elderly horses, growth is often slower.
More importantly, the hoof is only one part of the rehabilitation process. Tendons adapt slowly. Ligaments remodel slowly. Muscles that have compensated for months or years cannot simply switch back to normal function. Joints that have worked under abnormal loading require time to regain mobility. Even the horse's nervous system must learn new movement patterns.
A useful comparison is orthodontic treatment in people. Teeth may be moved into better alignment within months, but retainers are worn for much longer while the surrounding bone remodels and stabilises. The same principle applies to horses. The visible hoof may grow more quickly than the body can adapt to using it correctly.
Months, or years, of poor hoof balance, inappropriate trimming, chronic compensation or restricted movement cannot be reversed in a handful of trims. Every rehabilitation programme is a gradual process of replacing unhealthy tissue with healthy tissue while allowing the rest of the horse time to adapt. Progress should therefore be measured over months, not weeks.
Age matters.
There comes a point where rehabilitation is no longer about returning the horse to ridden work. Instead it becomes about preserving dignity, mobility and comfort. For many geriatric horses, success means being able to graze comfortably, interact with companions and move without unnecessary pain. That is a worthwhile goal.
The bottom line.
The question should never be, "When can the shoes go back on?"
The better question is:
"What does this horse need in order to become as comfortable, healthy and functional as possible?"
For many horses, that answer lies in a rehabilitation programme that addresses the whole horse.
Appropriate hoof care. Dental assessment. Nutrition. Free movement. Veterinary investigation where indicated. Saddle and tack assessment where relevant. Management of chronic pain.
Temporary support can be provided with modern hoof boots, therapeutic pads and carefully selected rehabilitation aids while healthier structures develop. The aim is not simply to make the horse appear sound today, but to encourage the growth and function of a healthier hoof that can support the horse comfortably in the future.

WHAT IS HOOFCARE?

It’s constant diet tweaks, assessment of living environment, regular bodywork, exercise, correct engagement of the body, compensation for imperfect conformation.

It’s understanding that a hoof is not a static structure. It is living tissue, constantly growing, adapting and responding to everything happening higher up the horse, to everything happening inside the horse, to things happening outside of the horse. All living organisms try to move towards healing, but that can look different for each individual.

It’s recognising that the hoof is often the messenger, the giver of secrets held somewhere inside.

It’s managing sugar and calorie intake, balancing minerals, supporting gut health and understanding that what goes into the horse will eventually show up in the feet. Wormers, medication, toxins. They all show up in some way,

It’s paying attention to movement. But not just how much movement they get, but how they move. Loading, compensating, efficiency.

It’s looking beyond the hoof capsule to the shoulders, neck, back, pelvis and hindquarters. Tight muscles, restrictions and asymmetries all influence how forces travel through the limbs and how the feet develop.

It’s considering surfaces. Deep mud, hard ground, soft arenas, tracks, grass, gravel and roadwork all create different demands and stimulate different adaptations.

It’s understanding that medical history matters. Previous injuries, arthritis, suspensory issues, tendon damage, kissing spines, gastric ulcers, EMS, PPID, metabolic dysfunction, laminitis and neurological conditions can all influence how a horse moves, loads its limbs and develops its feet.

It’s recognising that some hoof distortions are not caused by poor trimming, but by the horse’s attempt to protect itself from pain or dysfunction elsewhere in the body.

It’s understanding that medication history can matter too. Long-term pain relief, steroid use, metabolic disease management and rehabilitation programmes can all affect the hoof.

It’s knowing things that happened months or even years ago may still be influencing the feet you see today.

It’s understanding that age, workload, injury history, genetics, conformation and even seasonality influence hoof health.

It’s knowing that growth rates change throughout the year. That feet can improve, plateau or deteriorate depending on countless interacting factors. Even a perfect hoof is only so in that moment in time.

It’s recognising that a trim is simply one small intervention within a much larger system.

It’s accepting that there is rarely a perfect trim because there is rarely a perfect horse. Most horses come with asymmetries, old injuries, movement habits, medical histories and conformational challenges that require thoughtful management.

It’s making small adjustments, reassessing, observing and adjusting again.

It’s understanding that the horse standing in front of you today is not the same horse that was standing there six weeks ago. It’s not the same horse that stood in front of you before a trim.

It’s appreciating that hoofcare is not something that happens every few weeks when the farrier or trimmer arrives. The trim may take an hour. The other 1,000 hours happen in between and require intentional management from caregivers.

Healthy hooves are usually the result of hundreds of tiny management decisions made consistently over time. A sprinkle of good fortune and good health. Conscientious decision making. Proactive thinking and a great team around you both.

I’ve been scrutinising the tracking up and trying to determine how significant this is.

Barry doesn’t track up in the earlier video, but he slightly closer in the recent ones, particularly before his recent trim. Is it to do with speed, body comfort, musculature or hoof balance, whether he’s warmed up or other parameters?🤔

We could easily take the credit for this change seeing its an improvement but that wouldn’t credit everything in his management, situational factors or biology.

Equally we could take criticism that he’s not tracking up. I tend to view it as just a snapshot of info, that helps us to assess his overall health.

Barry is slightly toed out on his left fore. We try to kept the hoof balanced to his anatomy and develop the strength of his feet.

Barry’s got a slightly long toe still (rehab still ongoing) so his breakover is likely delayed. He’s had caudal heel failure/ inflammation around is navicular in the past and associated body issues. The inflammation has past and he’s no longer on pain meds and there is no heat in his hooves.

His heels are recovering (less underrun) and he doesn’t appear to be in pain. He’s still sunken in his front end and could do with some bodywork…. We hand walk him but I’d like to start doing more groundwork if only I had more time. Overall he’s pretty happy and healthy and enjoying his retirement.
