Before the rain arrived/arrives we quickly weeded the winter crops. Out of interest we had a little dig around, this field has just come out of a two year herbal ley the purpose of which is to increase fertility, soil organic matter and improve soil structure. A 1% increase in soil organic matter can help hold somewhere between 150,000 and 170,000 liters of water of a hectare. Looks like there was still a bit of moisture under the surface!! It takes time and consistency, we are only 9 years into our organic journey still lots to learn.

40,000+ onions harvested yesterday before the next heat wave damaged them. We had lifted them a few weeks ago and had left them to cure in the field but with the temperatures due to hit mid 30’s again we decided not to risk afield of half cooked onions!! Fortunately family were on had to help box them up, they hopefully will now finish curing in the boxes out of direct sunlight under the trees.

Another week done! Some of the winter field crops in this week which feels good to have got done. Trying to keep on top of everything else is a stretch but tomatoes feel like they are back under control. We also had planted a succession of courgettes ,cucumber and some toms are planted.

Super busy at the moment weeding and planting, so rest assured more produce is on the way!! Weeding day required a lot of concentration due to tight tolerances to try and do a tidy job on it. Dosing the transplants when planting has been pretty revolutionary for us combined with having some really good quality plants we are looking forward to see how they grow now they are in the field. This afternoon we also hosted the second group of French agricultural students of this year, they had some really great questions and coped well with the heat! .u.l.t._kress
