Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Transport Daryl Vaz said he has received a formal force majeure request from the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) as Category 5 Hurricane Melissa approaches. A force majeure clause temporarily relieves a company of certain obligations when an extraordinary event—like a major hurricane—makes normal operations impossible, allowing rapid protective action and later restoration. 

Officials note this step signals that sections of the electricity system could be severely affected and that JPS may not be able to fully meet licence requirements during impact. Invoking the clause helps the utility prioritise safety shut-offs, damage assessments, and emergency repairs before resuming regular service commitments.

Jamaica has been receiving pledges of support for hurricane recovery from regional and international partners, says Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.

“We have received calls of support from our partners; the United Nations, United States, the British, the French, the European Union, and CDEMA. All CARICOM countries have also reached out to pledge assistance,” the Prime Minister said, expressing gratitude for their solidarity and willingness to help.
