This year, the ritual of welcoming the gods (kamimukae-shinji) will be performed on Wednesday, the 18th of November. ✍

As the ceremony goes every year, all the gods of Shintoism will gather on Inasa no Hama beach, in the dark of the night. Sacred fires will be lit on the shore and, with a silent crowd watching, the chief priests of Ōyashiro (Izumo Taisha) will read sacred texts to welcome the gods. A solemn, dignified moment to witness.

After the ceremony, the gods stay for a week in Izumo, holding a divine meeting that will set our destiny in relationships of the next year, before going back to their respective shrines. That is why the 10th month of Japan’s old lunar calendar is called “kannazuki,” the month with no gods present – as they are all in Izumo. Only here in Shimane, we call this period “the month with the gods” or “kamiarizuki.”

Take a step back in time at the Hirata Honjin Memorial Museum! 🕰️

The Honkisa family residence was built in 1735. The Honkisa family was a family of wealthy merchants who made their fortune through the manufacture of sake and the cotton trade. The Hirata Honjin Memorial Museum is a reconstruction of this family’s original house. After adding an exhibition hall, the museum opened in 1989.

On the second floor is a display of about 500 objects, including folk tools from the Meiji era to the early Showa era, cotton spinning wheels, and other things. Exhibitions are held several times a year in the exhibition hall located south of the main building.

The museum has a very nice dry landscape garden in the Izumo style, with stepping stones rising high enough above the ground so that the garden can be walked even when it is snowing.

📍Hirata Honjin Memorial Museum
Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Admission: Free for the main building (an admission fee is charged for exhibitions)
Access: From Unshu Hirata Station, it takes 5 minutes by bus or car

In Izumo, during the festival of the deities, kamiarisai, “jinzai mochi” (literally meaning “mochi of the deities”) was served to people waiting to visit shrines. It is said that “jinzai” was pronounced as “zunzai” in the Izumo dialect, and continued mutating to eventually become “zenzai.”

If you haven’t already tried zenzai, then maybe this special time of the year is a nice opportunity to have some “mochi of the deities?”

Hinomisaki Shrine Grand Festival (Miyuki Shinji ritual) 🌅

The annual festival of Hinomisaki Shrine, also called the Festival of the Setting Sun, is held on August 7th, and starts with a ritual on the grounds of the shrine at 5:30 p.m.

The festival continues with a procession including a mikoshi (portable Shinto shrine) leaving from the shrine and heading towards Fumishima island which is located just a few steps away.

When the sun goes down, the priests go to Fumishima Island, a sacred space where passage is usually forbidden, to perform the ritual. The procession stops in a place where it is possible to see the priests doing the ritual on the island from a distance. The view of the priests climbing Fumishima Island in the sunset is especially stunning.

When the ritual is over, the procession goes back to the shrine and a lottery is organized. All the attendants can take part in it and they can win prizes like a bottle of sake for example. The festival ends around 7:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Date: August 7th (every year)
Place: Hinomisaki Shrine and Fumishima Island
Hours: 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. (if you are using the public transportation don’t forget to check the last bus)

Shussai Ginger

Amongst Izumo’s local specialties is Shussai Ginger. Shussai Ginger is known for containing less fiber than ginger usually does, and for its refined taste.

Have you ever tried it?

Did you know that Kurumaya Ginger Sugar Candies, a store located on Momen Kaido Cotton Road (Hirata area) uses only local Shussai Ginger in its recipe?

In the summer, there's nothing better than enjoying “warigo soba,” a specialty of Izumo ! 🥢

What we call “warigo soba” is a way of serving and eating soba buckwheat noodles. The soba buckwheat noodles are served in 3 round bowls piled up one on top of the other. If you have a good appetite you can order 5 bowls or more!

You can add condiments to your soba, such as green onion, seaweed, grated spicy radish and dried bonito (it may vary from one restaurant to another).

Enjoy your meal!!
