ILÉM A study of place, culture and identity

24/09/2026

Grown in mineral-rich soils under intense desert sun and nourished by Kunlun glacial meltwater, Hotan roses bloom once a year at peak intensity, developing a deep, complex scent shaped by dramatic day-night temperature shifts and the life-giving rhythm of the Taklamakan. We are so fortunate to be able to bring this magic into a pantry staple: ILÉM Hotan Rose- Infused Olive Oil.

Camilla Dilshat is a young Uyghur artist based in London making sculptural work about diaspora, memory, and the particular grief of inheriting a home you’ve never fully lived in. Comfort spoons. A sinking chair. A paper pulp tonur built on hands and knees.

We share a heritage. That changed how I listened to this story. What she’s doing is finding new ways to feel “Uyghur” when the old ways were never fully available

This Interview is personal to me on so many levels.

For the first chapter of ILÉM PAPER, I had the pleasure of speaking with NAO IWAMATSU , an industrial designer based in Tokyo whose work I’ve loved for a long time.

Minimalism is something I’ve wanted to talk about for a while—not as a trend or an aesthetic, but as it exists today: as a way of living, as a design language. Finding the right person to have that conversation with matters, and I genuinely believe Nao is that person.

This interview is the most honest, considered exploration of that question I could have hoped for.
Through our conversation, you’ll get a real sense of Nao’s design identity, the way he sees the world, and how culture quietly shapes his work.

Read the full interview at ilem.world. I hope it brings you as much joy as it brought me.

I get questions about how to use the oils all the time. We are here experimenting with our Uji Matcha-Infused Olive Oil on dishes, layering all the textures and flavors, and creating a fun little surprise in the kitchen.

It was how the products were designed in the first place: imagine, experiment, have fun without rules, and find out what brings you the most joy.

A late summer salad made with some beautiful cherry tomatoes, grapes, figs, and some grilled peaches drizzled with ILÉM Hotan Rose- Infused Olive Oil. It kind of is what summer tastes like in one dish.

Three small objects, three different ways Japan turns the everyday into meaning: a Shigaraki tanuki that went from forest trickster to good-luck charm placed by shop doors and homes an Oribe bowl that broke from centuries of tea-ceremony restraint by daring to be loud and green, and a pair of geta built to lift you above the mud in the rain.
