Fantastic day yesterday at Hydro Victoria Africa HQ!

We welcomed a group of enthusiastic cage fish farmers from Bunyala for a hands-on training session. We delved into Best Aquaculture Management Practices, covering everything from stocking densities and feed management to species selection and financial record-keeping. 🐟📚This is what social entrepreneurship is all about for us; empowering communities and democratizing vital skills to help SMEs grow and succeed. It's about building a sustainable future for Africa's food systems, far beyond just CSR initiatives.

Congratulations to Venessa Ominde! 🎉

Venessa, COO of Soldier Fly Diverse Limited and a Youth in Sustainable Aquaculture - YISA Kenya program participant, was selected by the Mastercard Foundation to represent youth across the region tomorrow at MESPT side event during the FINAS 2026 Summit in Nairobi.

At 25, Venessa has helped grow her Kakamega-based Black Soldier Fly enterprise from KES 750,000 to KES 3.5 million in revenue in just two years, creating jobs for 25 young people. She's also become a mentor in her own right; training over 1,184 young people and farmers across Kakamega, Busia and Homa Bay counties in sustainable, climate-smart farming practices.

On the panel, alongside leaders from Times U Sacco, UTS Sacco, Jawabu Biashara and DigiCow Africa, she will be sharing the real financing challenges aquaculture SMEs face, even seasoned ones like hers. We're cheering her on as she brings the voice of youth-led green enterprise to this important conversation! 🐟💚

This March we continue to highlight the great strides made by women in the aquaculture sector.

So far through the Youth in Sustainable Aquaculture - YISA Kenya programme, 52,000+ young women are actively engaged in aquaculture enterprises for dignified and fulfilling livelihoods.

Venessa, Anatalia, and Bilhah noted that through active and consistent participation in their ventures, they have achieved monetary gain and by extension impacted on the lives of those around them through dignified work opportunities, knowledge transfer, quality supplies, and market access.

We are proud to partner with Ethical Seafood Research (ESR) to strengthen animal welfare practices within Kenya’s aquaculture sector.

This collaboration comes at a critical time as more young farmers and enterprises including participants under the Youth in Sustainable Aquaculture - YISA Kenya programme continue to scale production and explore new market opportunities.

Through this partnership, Hydro Victoria will work with ESR and technical partners to embed practical welfare standards across hatchery, cage farming and value chain operations, while supporting farmer training, applied research and the development of locally relevant guidance for fish handling, transport and harvest.

We are especially excited about what this means for our institutional partnerships with Maseno university, the Calestous Juma Legacy Foundation, and other ecosystem actors, as we deepen knowledge exchange, innovation and capacity-building efforts that strengthen sustainable food systems.

Strengthening animal welfare in Kenyan aquaculture. 🐟

We’re excited to announce our partnership with Hydro Victoria, a social enterprise at the forefront of empowering communities and strengthening food security across Kenya.

Founded by aquaculture specialist, Fredrick Juma, Hydro Victoria is committed to transforming Africa’s food systems through innovative and sustainable aquaculture, circular economy solutions and capacity-building programmes.

Together, ESR and Hydro Victoria will collaborate to:

→ Embed animal welfare practices within their hatchery and cage farming operations.
→ Train and support farmers and aquaculture operators across Kenya’s value chain.
→ Develop local welfare standards and technical guidance for fish handling, transport and harvest.
→ Advance research and innovation to improve resilience, reduce mortality and strengthen aquaculture.
→ Introduce practical tools and training programmes that help farmers monitor and improve welfare-oriented production practices on farm.

As part of this collaboration, ESR will provide technical expertise on animal welfare, humane handling and slaughter, while supporting applied research, training programmes and the development of evidence-based standards and guidance for the sector.

We also look forward to bringing in our close partners from FAI, Murilo Quintiliano and Sara Barrento, to explain the latest best practices for using their Tilapia Welfare App, and to support staff training through the FAI Academy’s tilapia welfare courses. In addition, ESR will support Hydro Victoria’s participation in the ASC - Aquaculture Stewardship Council's Farmers Support Improver Programme in collaboration with Roy van Daatselaar and Bianchi Patricia.

We’re excited to work closely with Hydro Victoria to help drive meaningful change for aquatic animals in Kenya and contribute to broader improvements across the sector.

Today, partners under the Youth in Sustainable Aquaculture - YISA Kenya program convened a webinar to mark International Women’s Day 2026 under the theme . The conversation brought together participants, aquaculture practitioners, mentors, and state actors to explore how intentional investment in women strengthens aquaculture value chains.

We were especially glad to see strong engagement during the session, with 82 listeners staying through the two-hour discussion, and the encouraging follow-up interest in production, an area Hydro Victoria continues to champion within sustainable systems.

Key highlights from the conversation:
• Women’s participation in aquaculture must be co-designed to ensure initiatives reflect their lived realities and needs.
• Opportunities across the value chain remain vast. Young people are encouraged to pursue them and reach out to enablers for support.
• Safe spaces and supportive ecosystems are still needed for women to fully exercise agency and leadership within the sector.

These and more insights shared were a reminder that when we give access, opportunity, and support, the entire ecosystem gains.
