Ziphorah Meso, Director for Income Generating Activities at TVET institutions in Kenya, convened a strategic consultative meeting with Savannah Honey CEO Kyalo Mutua and Shadrack Agaki, a Technical Trainer and Policy Communication Consultant at the Ministry of Education – State Department for TVET, to explore opportunities for strengthening Kenya's beekeeping sector and honey value chain.

The leaders explored opportunities aimed at strengthening Kenya's honey value chain through:

Savannah Honey Bee Keeping Center yesterday hosted students from the Nairobi Institute of Business Studies (NIBS) for a learning and benchmarking visit focused on modern beekeeping, honey value addition, agribusiness opportunities, and sustainable income generation.

The visit reflects the growing interest among learning institutions in practical, market-driven training that equips students with real-world skills and entrepreneurial opportunities. Through hands-on demonstrations and knowledge sharing, participants gained valuable insights into the beekeeping value chain and the role of apiculture in creating employment and supporting economic growth.

The NIBS delegation was received and guided by Program Manager Winfred Muindi, who led the learning sessions and shared practical insights on beekeeping, honey value addition, agribusiness development, and sustainable income-generating opportunities within the apiculture sector.

BEE POLLEN STORAGE

We buy bee pollen from our clients @ 6800 per kg.

It is recommended immediately after drying and cleaning, pollen should be packaged in clean, airtight containers. If allowed to stand in the open air for any period of time, the pollen will absorb moisture from the air and subsequently deteriorate.

On Tuesday this week, the Youth Fund held a consultative meeting with Savannah Honey CEO Mr. Kyalo Mutua to revive the existing partnership and explore innovative ways of scaling it. The discussions also focused on expanding marketing activities across selected counties. YEDF was represented by the Ag. Manager, Market Support and Linkages, Ms. Christine Ochieng.

Through the previous phase of the partnership, 1,000 young people were trained in value addition within the beekeeping value chain. The renewed partnership now targets 2,000 youth who will benefit from training and value addition programs in propolis and bee venom.

CONTRACTUAL BEE VENOM FARMING

Benefit today from our high quality bee venom collectors, training on bee venom harvesting and handling, our bee venom honey and our anti aging venom creams.

We contract our clients for 5 years for bee venom farming.
We buy a gram of bee venom @ 4000 from our contracted farmers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.
1. How safe are bees when harvesting bee venom?
Beekeepers should know how many times, at what time and weather, and what level of electricity to use while collecting bee venom. Big experience and special knowledge is necessary in order to collect bee venom and not causing harm to bees. Bees’ health is the most important for us, as only healthy bees can grant us strong, high activity of bee venom powder.
2. How much bee venom can be collected from one hive?
It depends on several circumstances: collectors, how strong and healthy bees are, how many bees are there in the hive and when one is harvesting bee venom. On average, beekeepers take 0.3-0.7 grams of bee venom powder from each hive.
3. Can anyone use bee venom powder for producing any cosmetic or apitherapy product?
No. It is highly advised that if a person is not a professional pharmacist, cosmetologist, apitherapy doctor or researcher, it is not recommended to use bee venom in any purpose. It is because, if somebody has allergy on bee venom, it may suffocate just in moment after opening up the roof of the bottle. One must be professional to use it.
4. Does the color of bee venom define the quality of bee venom?
Yes and no. Color is not a measure of quality. Color maybe pale gray, human skin color, light yellow and brownish. It depends on the technique of harvesting, time of harvesting and race of bees. However, if bee venom is 5 or more years old, it becomes dark brown, because of the damaged cells of proteins and enzymes.

MAINTAINING AND MANAGING QUEEN BEES
A docile strain of young queens is best for colony maintenance. Docile strains are valued for their high honey production and lower swarming risk.
The queen is the only fertile female in a honey bee colony and is in charge of keeping the worker bee population strong. Natural replacement of an older queen bee with a daughter queen occurs in bee colonies, but this can result in an aggressive colony that is vulnerable to disease, low levels of honey production, and ineffective pollination. As a result, queen bees should be replaced on a regular basis to maintain viable productive colonies and improve disease resistance.
When you purchase queen bees from reputable and accredited breeders, consider the temperament, docility, colour, productivity and disease resistance of the queen. Introduce new queens into the hive when weather changes and ensure access to nectar and pollen flow. Kill old queens a day prior to replacing
