Pig Farming Breeding Strategies

Many pig farmers fail not because pigs are bad business…

But because they breed without a clear strategy.

A farmer buys any boar.
Uses any sow.
Keeps breeding piglets from the same family.
Then later starts complaining:

“Piglets are small.”
“Growth is slow.”
“Too many diseases.”
“Few piglets are surviving.”

Breeding is not gambling.

Good pig farming starts with good genetics.

A smart pig farmer plans breeding like a serious business.

First…

Choose strong and healthy parent stock.

Avoid pigs that:
• Grow slowly
• Have weak legs
• Are always sick
• Produce few piglets
• Have poor feeding habits

Good breeding pigs should:
• Grow fast
• Eat well
• Have strong bodies
• Produce many healthy piglets
• Show good mothering ability

Another big mistake farmers make is inbreeding.

This is when farmers mate pigs from the same family.

Brother to sister.
Father to daughter.
Mother to son.

Wueh… this silently destroys many pig farms.

Inbreeding can cause:
• Weak piglets
• Poor growth
• Deformities
• Low fertility
• High deaths

Always bring in new blood after some time.

A good breeding record book can save your farm.

Record:
• Mating dates
• Expected farrowing dates
• Number of piglets born
• Deaths
• Growth performance

Farmers who keep records make better breeding decisions.

Timing also matters.

Do not breed gilts too early.

A young female pig should have enough body weight and maturity before breeding.

Rushing breeding only gives weak piglets and stressed mothers.

And one more thing…

Do not keep breeding pigs that keep giving poor results just because you are emotionally attached to them.

A profitable farmer removes weak performers quickly.

Pig farming rewards discipline, not emotions.

Smart breeding today creates strong profits tomorrow.
