Boron is an essential micronutrient in avocados. It is required in very small amounts. It has such a narrow gap between deficiency and toxicity. It builds and stabilizes cell walls, supports cell division and elongation, and drives pollen germination and pollen tube growth. Because it moves poorly inside most plants, a steady supply is needed at budding and flowering rather than one correction late in the season.

At budding, boron supports cell division in the developing inflorescence and the quality of the flowers it carries. Because boron is poorly mobile in the tree, new tissue depends on what is supplied at that moment, not on reserves.

At flowering, boron drives pollen germination and pollen tube growth down the style. Without it, even good pollinator activity and good weather produce poor fertilization. At the pinhead stage, when fruitlets are barely formed, rapid cell division sets the fruit's structure, and boron keeps those cell walls stable so the fruitlet is retained.

Avocado tolerates very little boron, so overapplication quickly causes harm. Excess accumulates at leaf tips and margins, producing yellowing, then brown scorched edges, early leaf drop and shoot dieback.

Today, the Dairy Research Institute hosted Deutsche Welhungerhilfe, Germany, a private Aid organization that has been implementing the Scaling Up Renewable Energy technologies for Agri-Food Value Chain Transformation (SRET) Project. The project focuses on strengthening the integration of renewable energy technologies within the dairy and horticulture value chains to enhance productivity, reduce production costs, improve climate resilience and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Main interest areas were on sustainable dairy and poultry improvement, feed systems optimization, renewable energy in intensive dairy systems, pest and disease management and milk value addition.

The team was taken on a farm tour by David Mbugua, William Ayako and other scientists on behalf of the Institute Director Dr. Samuel Mbuku. They appreciated forage technologies supporting dairy, dairy goat breeding and housing, feed formulation and manufacture of Utafiti Premium feeds, milk value addition and research efforts in KALRO chicken improvement programme.

Dr Goudian Gwadema, the projects area manager who led the visiting group drawn from Kiambu county government, civil society, financial institutions and Agrican Development Services (ADS), appreciated the progress KALRO had made and looked forward to collaboration with DRI in the new future.
