Improved Kenya Top Bar Hive

The earlier version that was made in the 1960’s had no air regulator in place. Bees would die due to high temperatures during the hot season months in the semi-arid and arid areas. Its roof was made of iron sheet with no space for air to circulate, hence the overheating of the hive leading to death and migration of the surviving bees. The queen bee dies due to suffocation and this leads to collapsing of the colony. ( This is also referred to as colony collapse).

The improved KTBH has a raised roof, with wooden insulation in the inner parts and ventilation holes. This allows free flow of air in and out hence favorable temperature of 43.50C is maintained.

The Brooding Section

We have the brooding section which has ten frames. It has holes at the base for easy movement of bees in and out of the hive. This section also has the queen excluder mesh.
